"Verily I say to you, I do not know you."
1:544⧉ ⤴︎
For "the Lord does not know the ways of the ungodly."

Now I should have wished to keep silent, and to say nothing of my own, but to content myself with these things alone;
1:548⧉ ⤴︎
但為免你們以為我隨口說這些事,倒要叫你們從經歷和真理信我所講述的;
but lest you should think that I say these things idly, and rather that you may believe from experience and truth that I relate them;
1:549⧉ ⤴︎
for this reason, even though I become as a fool, yet the Lord who hears knows the purity of my conscience, and that it is not for my own sake, but for the sake of your love and exhortation, that I again tell these things which I have seen of the demons' devices.

1:566⧉ ⤴︎

rather it was the Lord, who said:

And I, children, mindful of the apostolic saying, transferred these things to myself, that you may learn not to grow faint in asceticism, nor to fear the devil and the illusions of his demons.
1:586⧉ ⤴︎

"Why do the monks, and all the other Christians, blame me without cause? Why do they curse me every hour?" And when I said:
1:591⧉ ⤴︎
"Why, then, do you trouble them?" He said:
1:592⧉ ⤴︎
"It is not I who trouble them, but they themselves disturb themselves;
1:593⧉ ⤴︎
Have they not read: 'The swords of the enemy have failed utterly, and you have demolished cities'? I no longer have a place, nor a weapon, nor a city.
1:594⧉ ⤴︎

Everywhere Christians have come to be;
1:595⧉ ⤴︎
and now even the desert has been filled with monks.
1:596⧉ ⤴︎
Let them keep guard over themselves, and let them not curse me in vain."
1:597⧉ ⤴︎
Then I, marveling at the grace of the Lord, said to him:
1:598⧉ ⤴︎
"Though you are always a liar, and never speak the truth, yet now, even against your will, you have spoken this truly;
1:599⧉ ⤴︎
for Christ, having come, has made you weak, and casting you down, has stripped you bare."
1:600⧉ ⤴︎
And he, hearing the name of the Savior, and unable to bear the burning that came from it, became invisible.
1:601⧉ ⤴︎
If, then, the devil himself confesses that he can do nothing, we ought utterly to despise both him and his demons.
1:602⧉ ⤴︎
那仇敵與牠的群犬一同,有這許多詭計;
Now the enemy, together with his hounds, has all these many wiles;
1:603⧉ ⤴︎
but we, having learned their weakness, are able to despise them.
1:604⧉ ⤴︎
Let us not, therefore, in this way be cast down beforehand in our minds, nor brood in our soul on cowardice, nor fashion fears for ourselves, saying:
1:605⧉ ⤴︎
『莫非有鬼魔來把我推倒;
'Perhaps a demon will come and overthrow me;
1:606⧉ ⤴︎
perhaps he will lift me up and dash me down, or appearing suddenly will throw me into confusion.'
1:607⧉ ⤴︎
我們絕不要存這樣的念頭,也不要像將要滅亡的人那樣憂愁;
Let us not entertain such thoughts at all, nor grieve as though we were perishing;
1:608⧉ ⤴︎
倒要更加放膽,常常喜樂,像那些正得拯救的人;
rather let us take courage and rejoice always, as those who are being saved;
1:609⧉ ⤴︎
and let us reckon in our soul that the Lord is with us, who has routed and brought them to nought.
1:610⧉ ⤴︎
And let us always consider and bear in mind that, the Lord being with us, the enemies will do us no harm.
1:611⧉ ⤴︎
For when they come, they become toward us such as they find us, and they conform their phantoms to the thoughts they find in us.
1:612⧉ ⤴︎
所以,牠們若發現我們害怕慌亂,就立刻像強盜發現無人看守之處,乘虛而入;
If, then, they find us fearful and troubled, at once they themselves, like robbers finding the place unguarded, mount the attack;
1:613⧉ ⤴︎
and what we ourselves imagine, this they bring about with additions.
1:614⧉ ⤴︎
For if they see us afraid and cowardly, they greatly increase our cowardice through phantoms and threats, and thereafter the wretched soul is tormented by these.
1:615⧉ ⤴︎
但牠們若見我們在主裡喜樂,思想將來的美福,默想主的事,並思量萬事都在主手中,沒有鬼魔能勝過基督徒,也絲毫無權柄轄制任何人;
But if they find us rejoicing in the Lord, and reckoning on the good things to come, and meditating on the things of the Lord, and reasoning that all things are in the Lord's hand, and that no demon prevails against a Christian, nor has any authority at all over anyone;
1:616⧉ ⤴︎
seeing the soul secured by such thoughts, they turn away ashamed.
1:617⧉ ⤴︎
仇敵就是這樣,見約伯四圍有藩籬護衛,便離開了他;
Thus the enemy, seeing Job fenced about, withdrew from him;
1:618⧉ ⤴︎
but finding Judas stripped of these defences, he took him captive.
1:619⧉ ⤴︎
所以,我們若願藐視仇敵,就當常常思想主的事,使魂在盼望中常常喜樂;
So then, if we wish to despise the enemy, let us always reckon on the things of the Lord, and let the soul ever rejoice in hope;
1:620⧉ ⤴︎
and we shall see the demons' sports as smoke, and themselves fleeing rather than pursuing.
1:621⧉ ⤴︎
For they are exceedingly cowardly, as I said before, ever awaiting the fire prepared for them.
1:622⧉ ⤴︎
And keep this also by you as a token for fearlessness against them:
1:623⧉ ⤴︎
Whenever any apparition occurs, do not fall down beforehand in cowardice, but whatever it may be, take courage and ask first:
1:624⧉ ⤴︎
『你是誰?從哪裡來?』若是聖者的顯現,他們就使你心安,將你的懼怕變為喜樂;
'Who are you, and whence?' And if it be a vision of holy ones, they will reassure you, and turn your fear into joy;
1:625⧉ ⤴︎

他若沒有犯罪,也不可自誇;
but if he has not sinned, let him not boast;
1:767⧉ ⤴︎
but let him continue in the good, and not grow slack, nor condemn his neighbour, nor justify himself, as the blessed Apostle Paul said, until the Lord come, who searches out the hidden things.
1:768⧉ ⤴︎
因為我們所行的事,常連自己也不知曉;
For often even from ourselves we are hidden as to the things we do;
1:769⧉ ⤴︎
and we ourselves do not know, but the Lord comprehends all things.
1:770⧉ ⤴︎
Giving the judgment, then, to Him, let us have compassion on one another, and let us bear one another's burdens, but let us examine ourselves, and what we lack, let us be eager to fill up.
1:771⧉ ⤴︎
And let this also be an observance for security against sinning:
1:772⧉ ⤴︎
各人當把魂的行為和動向記下、寫下,彷彿將要向彼此報告一樣;
Let each one note and write down the deeds and movements of the soul, as though about to report them to one another;
1:773⧉ ⤴︎
and be confident that, being altogether ashamed to have them known, we shall cease from sinning, and from harbouring anything base in our thoughts at all.
1:774⧉ ⤴︎
For who, when sinning, wishes to be seen? Or who, having sinned, does not rather lie, wishing to escape notice? Just as, then, seeing one another we would not commit fornication, so, if we write down our thoughts as though reporting them to one another, we shall the more keep ourselves from foul thoughts, being ashamed to have them known.
1:775⧉ ⤴︎
因此,讓那記錄成為我們眼前同修者眼目的代替;
Let the writing, then, be to us instead of the eyes of our fellow-ascetics;
1:776⧉ ⤴︎
好叫我們因寫下如同被看見一般而臉紅,便絲毫不存卑劣之念;
that, blushing to write as much as to be seen, we may not at all entertain base things;
1:777⧉ ⤴︎
and thus moulding ourselves, we shall be able to bring the body into bondage, and to please the Lord, and to trample on the schemings of the enemy.
1:778⧉ ⤴︎
這些事,他都囑咐那些與他見面的人;
These things, then, he charged upon those who met with him;
1:779⧉ ⤴︎
對那些受苦的人,他與他們同受苦,與他們同禱告;
but with those who were suffering he suffered together, and prayed together with them;
1:780⧉ ⤴︎
主也屢次在許多事上垂聽了他;
and often and in many cases the Lord hearkened to him;
1:781⧉ ⤴︎
他蒙垂聽時不誇口,不蒙垂聽時也不發怨言;
and neither did he boast when heard, nor murmur when not heard;
1:782⧉ ⤴︎
but always he himself gave thanks to the Lord, and he exhorted those who were suffering to be patient, and to know that the healing belonged neither to him, nor at all to men, but only to God, who does it when He wills, and to whom He pleases.
1:783⧉ ⤴︎
於是那些受苦的人也把這長者的話當作醫治來領受,他們也學會不灰心,倒要忍耐;
The sufferers, then, received the old man's words also as a healing, themselves too learning not to be faint-hearted, but rather to be patient;
1:784⧉ ⤴︎
and those who were healed were taught to give thanks not to Antony, but to God alone.
1:785⧉ ⤴︎
There was, for instance, one called Fronto, who happened to be from the imperial court, and had a grievous affliction—for he was gnawing his own tongue, and his eyes were in danger of being injured—who, coming into the mountain, asked Antony to pray for him.
1:786⧉ ⤴︎
And he, having prayed, said to Fronto:
1:787⧉ ⤴︎
When he urged him strongly and remained inside for days, Antony persisted in saying:
1:788⧉ ⤴︎
'You will not be able to be healed by remaining here.
1:789⧉ ⤴︎
Go out, and when you reach Egypt, you will see the sign wrought upon you.'
1:790⧉ ⤴︎
那人信了,便出去;
That man, believing, went out;
1:791⧉ ⤴︎
and as soon as he saw Egypt, he ceased from his affliction, and the man became whole, according to the word of Antony, which he had learned from the Saviour when he prayed.
1:792⧉ ⤴︎
And a certain virgin from Busiris in Tripolis had a grievous and very loathsome affliction.
1:793⧉ ⤴︎
因為她的眼淚、鼻涕,和從耳中落地的膿水,立時都化作蟲;
For her tears, and the mucus, and the discharges falling to the ground from her ears, at once became worms;
1:794⧉ ⤴︎
and she was also paralysed in body, and had her eyes not in their natural state.
1:795⧉ ⤴︎
Her parents, learning that monks were going off to Antony, believing in the Lord who healed the woman with the issue of blood, asked to journey together with these, along with their daughter.

1:797⧉ ⤴︎
but the others went in, and just as they wished to report concerning the virgin, he anticipated them, and himself recounted both the child's affliction and how she had journeyed with them.
1:798⧉ ⤴︎
And when they asked that they too might come in, this he did not permit, but said:
1:799⧉ ⤴︎
'Go, and you will find her healed, unless she has died.

1:802⧉ ⤴︎

'Take a jar of water, and run the road toward Egypt;
1:808⧉ ⤴︎

for the distance was a day's journey.
1:812⧉ ⤴︎
