So then all men were freed from the oppression of the tyrants; and, delivered from their former ills, each in his own way confessed that the only true God was the Champion of the godly. But for us especially, who had hung our hopes upon the Christ of God, there was unspeakable gladness, and a kind of divine joy bloomed upon all, as we beheld every place that a little before had been laid in ruins by the impieties of the tyrants now coming back to life as from a long and deadly destruction, and temples again rising from their foundations to a boundless height, and receiving a splendour far surpassing that of those formerly besieged.
Moreover the supreme Emperors, by continual legislation on behalf of the Christians, confirmed God's great bounty toward us yet more lastingly and more largely; and letters from the Emperor came in person to the bishops, with honours and gifts of money. It will not be out of place, at the proper point in this account, to engrave in this book—as upon a sacred monument—the texts of these documents, translated from the language of the Romans into Greek, that they may also be carried in memory to all who come after us.
