so also in the iniquity of heretics the truth is not to be denied, by which the sacrament of baptism is held fast. (p. 172, 9, in Knöll's edition.) ONE BOOK: ON THE ONE BAPTISM, AGAINST PETILIAN, TO CONSTANTINE. At that time a certain friend of mine received a book On the One Baptism from I-know-not-what Donatist presbyter, who indicated that Petilian, their bishop of Constantina, had written it. This my friend brought to me and earnestly begged me to reply to it. But I wished my own book, in which I replied, to bear the same title, that is, On the One Baptism. In which book, as for that which I said:
53:83
Constantinum imperatorem Donatistis criminantibus ordinatorem Caeciliani Felicem Aptugnensem non negasse accusationis locum, quamuis eos in Caecilianum fictis criminibus calumniosos fuisset expertus, in ordine temporum postea consideratum aliter inuentum est. nam prius memoratus imperator causam Felicis fecit audiri a proconsule, ubi legitur absolutus, et postea ipse Caecilianum cum accusatoribus eius auditum comperit innocentem, ubi eos expertus est in eius criminibus calumniosos. qui ordo temporum per consules declaratus multo uehementius in ea causa calumnias Donatistarum conuincit penitusque subuertit, quod alibi ostendimus. Hic liber sic incipit: Respondere aduersa sentientibus .
that the emperor Constantine, when the Donatists brought accusations against Felix of Aptunga, the ordainer of Caecilian, did not deny a hearing to the accusation, although he had found them to be calumniators in the fabricated crimes against Caecilian—this, when the order of the times was afterward considered, was found to be otherwise. For the said emperor first had the case of Felix heard by the proconsul, where he is read to have been acquitted, and afterward the emperor himself found Caecilian innocent when he had been heard together with his accusers, where he found them to be calumniators in the crimes charged against him. This order of the times, made clear by the consuls, convicts the calumnies of the Donatists in that case far more forcibly and utterly overturns them, as we have shown elsewhere. This book begins thus: 'To answer those who think adversely...'
