Lemmas come mainly from word-level tagging of other books in the same language (not from this verse), falling back to dictionary form-matching for the rest. Rare homographs can still be misread; verify against the original and a specialist lexicon where precision matters.

1:440
and you have understood, and you have inquired after the eternal paths of the Lord;
你也已明白,且已尋問了耶和華永恆的路徑;
1:441
and you have seen where the good way is, and you have walked in it, and you have found sanctification for your soul.
I am the Lord your God;
我是耶和華——你的神;
1:443
I have shown you how to find the way of righteousness, in which you shall walk, and you have heard my commandments.
And I too, exceedingly rejoicing in your good deeds, will make bold to speak in company with God, taking my words from the great Jeremiah:
Blessed are you, because you have put off the garment of the mourning of your affliction;
你是有福的,因為你已脫去了你困苦哀痛的衣裳;
1:446
I mean the old man, who is being corrupted according to the desires of deceit;
我是指那舊人,即那按著迷惑之私慾而漸漸敗壞的人;
1:447
and you have put on the comeliness of the glory that comes from God forever — I mean the new man, who in the spirit is being created according to Christ, in the image of the One who created him;
並穿上了那來自神、直到永遠的榮耀之莊嚴——我是指那新人,即那在靈裡按著基督、照著造他者的形像被造之人;
1:448
and you have clothed yourself with the double robe of the righteousness that comes from God;
你已披上了那來自神的公義雙重外袍;
1:449
and you have set upon your head the miter of eternal glory;
你已將永恆榮耀的冠冕戴在你頭上;
1:450
adorned both with the accessible manner of the virtues, and with the unstumbling word of wisdom.
Of these words I possess nothing more for the demonstration of the invisible disposition of my soul;
除了這些話語之外,我並無更多可用以證明我心靈中那不可見之意向的了;
1:452
for I have nothing worthy of your good deeds to offer to God and to you, except to admire you according to my power, and to accept you as you act rightly, and to rejoice together with you who propitiate God through good works;
因為我沒有任何配得上你們善行的東西可獻給神與你們,唯有盡我所能地敬佩你們、悅納你們的美善成就,並與你們一同歡欣,因你們藉善工使神得蒙悅納;
1:453
and through you to praise virtue;
並藉著你們來稱頌德行;
1:454
and through virtue to hymn God, that virtue which joins you to God.
so that it seems to me to be one and the same thing, and equal, to praise you and to praise virtue, and to hymn God, who has granted to you the splendor of virtue;
以致在我看來,稱頌你們與稱頌德行乃是同一件事、同等之事,如同頌讚那將德行之光輝賜予你們的神一般;
1:456
that virtue which, by the taking on—insofar as attainable to man—of the divine properties, deifies you by grace unto God.
That love is given in place of the law and the prophets;
因愛乃是代替律法與眾先知而被賜下的;
1:458
and that from it all the precepts of the commandments are issued, and by it they are comprehended in a single form.
Observe the motion according to reason and nature, from which man was turned away from the beginning by the counsel of the evil one.
The works of blessed love join into one, by an ineffable word, God and all mortals, around him who possesses it.
Having received the precious letters of your beloved self in the Lord, together with the blessing sent to the most devout monks of the pious monastery of the holy and glorious martyr George, I gave thanks to God for such readiness of yours toward what is good;
當我收到閣下這位在主內至為可親者所寄來的珍貴書信,連同那送給至聖榮耀殉道者喬治之聖潔修道院內、至虔敬諸修士的祝福時,我便為你們如此樂於行善的熱忱向神獻上感謝;
1:462
because through your zeal you loosed the bonds of those held fast by poverty, and thereby freed yourselves from the bonds of sin;
因為你們藉著熱忱,解開了那些被貧窮所困者的枷鎖,也因此使自己從罪的枷鎖中得了釋放;
1:463
and, having set out to nourish bodies, you nourished your own soul with divine grace, and you have given to me also occasion to reap the fruit of true contemplation.
For, having come to myself, I understood the reason for which God simply legislated that all human beings must show mercy to, and be shown mercy by, one another;
因為我獨自靜思之後便明白了:神何以如此單純地立法,要眾人彼此憐恤、也彼此蒙憐恤;
1:465
namely, that, wishing to unite you to one another both in nature and in intention, and truly impelling the whole of humankind toward this, he inscribed for us in loving-kindness the saving commandments;
就是說:祂願意使你們不僅在本性上、也在意念上彼此聯合,並真實地將全人類都推向此一目標,於是以仁愛之心為我們刻下了救人的誡命;
1:466
but the self-love and cleverness of men, having either rejected or sophistically evaded one another and the law, cut up the one nature into many parts;
但世人的自愛與私智,或棄絕、或狡辯規避了彼此與律法,把那唯一的本性切割成了許多部分;
1:467
and, having introduced the insensibility now prevailing over it, armed nature against itself by means of intention.
and having drawn near to God in intention on account of nature;
而此人卻因著本性、在意念上歸向了神;
1:469
and having shown in his own person what the mode of the principle "according to the image" is;
並在自己身上顯明了『按著形像』這道理的存在之式究竟為何;
1:470
and how God, fittingly, from the beginning, having created our nature like unto himself, and made it a most manifest image of his own goodness, established it;
以及神起初如何合宜地創造了我們這與祂自身相似的本性,並使之成為祂自身良善之昭然映像,如此設立了它;
1:471
that nature being in all respects the same with itself;
這本性在萬事上與其自身完全相同;
1:472
unwarlike, peaceable, free from faction, bound tight through love both to God and to itself;
不好爭鬥、和平、無紛爭,藉著愛而與神並自身緊密相繫;
1:473
according to which we hold fast to God with desire, and to one another with compassion.
And he showed mercy also to those who ought to be shown mercy;
祂也憐恤了那些理應蒙憐恤的人;
1:475
not only providing for them, but also teaching how God, though hidden, is manifested through those who are worthy;
不僅供應了他們的需要,也教導了隱藏的神如何藉著那些配得的人而得以顯明;
1:476
so that those in need too, henceforth, in reverence for the kindness shown toward them by their neighbor, may readily claim this grace also as being of God.
But if anyone, though able to do this from what he has, disregards those in need, he will rightly be shown to have severed those men from himself, and himself from God;
但若有人雖能憑其所有而行此事,卻忽視有需要的人,他便理當被顯明是既割斷了那些人與自己的關係,也割斷了自己與神的關係;
1:478
as one who, on account of his intention, has failed to recognize nature — or rather, has, on account of his intention, corrupted the good things belonging to his own nature.
These things, then, [befall] as many as have deliberately chosen harshness rather than loving-kindness, and, judging kinship and their own kin to be of less worth than a few coins, and by their longing for gold have walled off from themselves the entrances of God — they themselves piteously suffering, at their own hands, the fall from what is better;
至於那些故意在意念上選擇冷酷而非仁愛的人,他們將血親與同族看得比幾枚錢幣更卑賤,並因對黃金的貪戀,將神通往自己的入口封閉了起來——他們自己竟因自己之故,可悲地承受了從更美善之境墜落的下場;
1:480
—identity, despising all things upon the earth, as true advocates of God through their works.
Doing which, you, both now and formerly, have been shown to be, O beloved ones;
你們既如此行,無論現今或先前,都已被顯明如此,蒙愛的人啊;
1:482
in every word and manner, and by a generous scattering of your possessions, eagerly apportioning yourselves, in soul and body, to all, and showing that, in your own case, intention is the same as nature, being surpassed by nature in one respect alone, namely that it has received from nature the seeds of what has come to be;
無論在言語或行事上,皆藉慷慨施散所有之物,甘心情願地將自己身心分予眾人,並顯明在你們身上,意念與本性乃是同一的,僅在一事上為本性所超勝,即意念乃是從本性領受了那已生成之事的種子;
1:483
or rather, [surpassed] by God, from whom the powers of good things have also been laid down beforehand in nature.
propping up the weakness that was already tottering from the destitution of nature, and healing, as far as was possible, the ill fortune worn upon them by poverty;
你們扶持了那已因本性匱乏而動搖的軟弱,並盡力醫治了他們因貧窮所磨損而生的困厄;
1:485
Do not cease, then, doing good to those in need, so that through your emptying yourselves you may keep your fullness undiminished.
And with cheerfulness of soul, confirming your faith and hope and love toward God;
並以心靈的喜樂,堅固你們對神的信、望、愛;
1:487
Restrain the bond and the grudging extending of the hand, and the word of murmuring, just as the divine oracle somewhere says;
當克制那勉強的約束、勉強伸手的施予,以及怨言之語,正如神聖的話語某處所說;
1:488
which concerns the necessity of giving, and not deliberating over it.
to which regret altogether attaches itself;
而事後懊悔必然伴隨這猶豫遲疑而來;
1:490
a thing which is more burdensome than not doing it at all.
For we all know that, concerning the unworthiness of doing good or receiving it, no one has yet known with any exactness whom one ought to blame;
因為我們眾人都知道,關於行善與受惠二者之不配,迄今無人能確切、絲毫得知究竟當歸咎於誰;
1:492
whether those who are able to do good, or those who are in need of receiving good;
無論是那些有能力行善的人,或是那些需要受惠的人;
1:493
but that this belongs to the time that is yet to come;
而是說,這乃屬於將來的時機;
1:494
according to which it will be known what sort and how many your [deeds] are, and in what condition they happen to be.
Thus has God, in his wisdom, been pleased that for the present the abyss of his judgments should remain concealed.
And knowing this, the wise author of Proverbs exhorted us to cast our bread even upon the water without calculation;
智慧的箴言作者深知此理,故勸勉我們不加計較地將糧食撒在水面上;
1:497
as something that would not be swept away nor lost;
以為這糧食必不致被沖走,也不致失落;
1:498
but that it would afterward meet [them] again with greater increase — for those who, for the sake of the good, have possessed the giving of it in simplicity of heart — from God and our Savior Christ, who receives unto himself all things done by us to one another, whatever they may happen to be.
For if, as one who loves mankind, he willingly accepted to suffer on our behalf, what would he not willingly do for those who imitate his love of mankind toward us?
By the same [author], to the same [recipient]: On grief according to God
knowing that grief according to God works an unregretted repentance unto salvation, for those who have been strengthened by divine fear with the whole of their power;
深知依神之憂能成就導向拯救、無可後悔之悔改──惟獨對那些藉神聖懼怕而竭盡己力得堅固之人如此;
1:502
not allowing the soul, once it has turned away from the divine tribunals, to be disposed toward the things that are by nature corruptible;
不容許靈魂在偏離神聖審判之後,轉而傾向那些依本性而朽壞之物;
1:503
on account of which, for those who run the course of the present life negligently, the evil confusion of the passions, taking up residence [within them], prepares the wretched mind to be captured by the snares of the devil, and fittingly establishes it as teacher of every wickedness;
因此之故,對那些疏忽度過今生賽程之人而言,情慾的邪惡混亂便在其內安頓下來,使那可憐的心智淪為魔鬼羅網所擄獲,理所當然地使之成為一切邪惡的教師;
1:504
inasmuch as it has, contrary to nature, subjected the operation that is according to nature to the disorderly impulses of anger and desire. For the soul which has once, through deception, bound its intellective power to material things is most resourceful and swift only in the discovery of base things.
so that, guarded by her, he might strike out the evil sting of sin;
使他因蒙她護衛,得以擊退罪惡那邪惡的刺;
1:506
he is captured once for all by the arrows of the devil.
No one who invisibly cherishes her within the soul fears the manifold onslaughts of the demons;
凡在靈魂中隱然懷抱她者,無人懼怕群魔多方的侵襲;
1:508
No one who has chosen to live together with her is ever attached to visible things.
1:509

No one who has bound her indissolubly to his thoughts allows his senses to be carried disorderly toward what they ought not.
No one whose soul has been given her quality can at all consider himself greater than another;
凡使自己靈魂染上她之性質者,無人能認為自己在任何方面比他人更大;
1:512
but rather, on the contrary, he would believe himself to be, and be reckoned, less than everyone.
No one who has girded her about his mind slips away from the contemplation of divine things.
No one who has wholly fitted her to himself will be ignorant of the signs of the pious way of life.
Her the Holy Spirit creates, coming to dwell upon the hearts of the worthy.
This alone I know to be generative of the joy that is in the kingdom of heaven.
For grief according to God is clearly a divine seed;
因為依神之憂顯然乃是一粒神聖的種子;
1:518
yielding as its ripe fruit the gladness of the eternal goods.
Her the exact recollection in the mind of things once lived renews.
Her the book of conscience concerning our transgressions, diligently read, nourishes.
Her the remembrance of death procures, together with the most piercing pain that arises in the soul at the departure on account of it, ever being anticipated.
Her the fearsome and rigorous scrutiny of the spirits of wickedness, waged in the air against the soul, continually taking shape in the mind, preserves altogether unquenched.
For who, beloved, being stained, as I am, with the defilements of sins, does not fear the oversight of the holy angels—
by whom, receiving the end of the present life according to the divine decree, [the soul] is forcibly and wrathfully thrust out of the body, even against its will?
Who, carrying with himself a defiled conscience, does not dread the most savage and barbarous onslaught of the evil demons, as each of them, in this air after the soul's departure, by means of the passion that stands between [them], mercilessly drags the wretched soul toward himself, shames it by the exposure of the things it has done, and produces in it utter despair of all hope for the goods to come?
This grief the exact mental representation of the condition of the souls in Hades — [formed] after the scrutiny that takes place in the air against the spiritual powers of wickedness — nourishes unto salvation;
這憂愁——藉由在空中對抗邪惡諸靈之稽查過後、對陰間眾靈魂處境所作的精確描繪——得以蒙拯救地滋養;
1:527
[describing] how they pass their time in deep darkness and heaviest silence, having as their food the most piercing groans and tears, and the dejection that follows upon these;
[描繪]她們如何在深沉的黑暗與最沉重的靜默中度日,以極其劇烈的呻吟與眼淚、以及隨之而來的沮喪,作為食糧;
1:528
awaiting continually nothing else at all, but only the just condemnation [to come] at the divine verdict.
This grief the hope of the resurrection sustains;
這憂愁乃由復活的盼望所支撐;
1:530
[as does] the majesty of the fearsome and all-glorious coming of Christ;
[亦由]基督那可畏且極其榮耀之降臨的威嚴[所支撐];
1:531
[and] the most awe-inspiring day of judgment, continually meditated upon in the mind;
以及那至為可畏的審判之日,在心思中不斷被默想;
1:532
on which day heaven and earth, and the whole order of visible things, shall rush past and pass away;
在那日,天與地,以及一切可見受造之秩序,都將呼嘯而逝;
1:533
the elements being burned up and dissolved by the boundless fire, which purifies beforehand, for the coming of the Pure One, the creation defiled by us;
眾元素將被那無邊之火焚燒、消融;此火預先潔淨了被我們所玷污的受造界,為要迎接那潔淨者的降臨;
1:534
on which day thrones are set forth, and the Ancient of Days sits down before [them], and the innumerable ranks of holy angels and archangels stand by in ministerial service with fear and trembling;
在那日,寶座陳設,亙古常在者端坐居前,聖天使與天使長無數的班次,都懷著懼怕與戰兢侍立服事;
1:535
and the whole nature of mankind is brought unto examination;
並且人類全體的本性都被帶來受審查;
1:536
and books are opened, of our deeds and words and thoughts, containing their records with all exactness;
且展開記載我們行為、言語與思念的書卷,其中以極盡精確之方式載有一切記錄;
1:537
so that all will know one another's sins to the same degree that each knows his own, reading unerringly the book of his own conscience;
以至於眾人彼此得知對方的罪,正如各人知曉自己的罪一般——各人皆無誤地誦讀自己良心之書;
1:538
on which day some, having been stationed at the right hand of the Judge, will receive the promises of the ineffable goods;
在那日,有人被安置於審判者的右邊,將領受那不可言喻之美善的應許;
1:539
while [others,] taking their place [at the left], will receive the eternal fire, and the outer darkness, and the sleepless worm, and the gnashing of teeth, and the unceasing tears, and the unending shame — at which everyone condemned to the endless, age-long torment will be pained more than by all the other kinds of punishment together.
Of these truly fearsome things and names, he who has grief according to God in no way at all forgets;
凡懷有依神之憂者,絕不會忘記這些確實可畏的事與名;
1:541
but he will be disposed as one who is always seeing the Judge and being seen [by him];
反倒常懷如同時刻看見審判者、也被審判者所看見一般的心境;
1:542
and he will conduct the present life piously and justly, neither doing nor saying nor thinking anything that is alien to the divine grace and calling.
An offspring of this praiseworthy grief happens to be that exceptional good among men, humility;
這值得稱許的憂愁所生之子,正是人間那卓絕的美善——謙卑;
1:544
through which the pious and God-loving man will, in truth, consider himself the very least of all;
藉著謙卑,那虔敬、愛神之人,將依真理視自己為眾人中最微小者;
1:545
even if he be a king in rank, making the weakness common to nature the standard of his self-knowledge;
縱使他身居君王之位,仍以按本性而有的軟弱,作為認識自己的準則;
1:546
under which all who share in the same nature stand equally;
在這軟弱之下,凡分受相同本性者,皆處於同等地位;
1:547
in no way carrying his reasoning away from the principle according to nature on account of his rank.
A projection of this [humility] is constituted by meekness, being a disposition that repels the movements, contrary to nature, of both anger and desire;
謙卑的延伸乃是溫良,這是一種能排拒忿怒與慾念二者違反本性之動變的德性;
1:549
through which man receives likeness to the angels, among whom there is no raging anger barking indecently against its kin;
藉此[溫良],人便領受了與天使相似之處——在天使中並無那狂吠、不當地咆哮其同類的暴怒;
1:550
nor indeed desire, dissolving the intellective powers and dragging the longing down toward matter;
亦無那消解理智之力、且將意欲拖向物質的慾念;
1:551
but reason alone, having dominion over the whole [of man], and fervently leading in the mind toward the Logos who is beyond cause and nature.
The fruit of this [meekness] is love, according to which, being united to God and to one another, we willingly care for one another, as far as attainable, to the same degree that God, as compassionate, holds fast to all.
The end of this [love] is the kingdom of heaven, and the enjoyment of the divine goods that are there.
For to this end grief according to God leads those who cherish and guard her.
And the marks of this grief are: to have accustomed the eyes to see creation only unto the glory of the Creator;
而這憂愁的標記乃是:使雙眼習於惟獨為造物主的榮耀而觀看受造之物;
1:556
and to look upon the affairs of one's neighbor without envy and malice;
並且不帶嫉妒與惡意地看顧鄰人之事;
1:557
[and] to have the ears opened readily for the reception only of the words of God, and of the supplication of those who beseech us;
以及使雙耳只樂於敞開,以領受神的話語,並向我們懇求者的祈求;
1:558
but [to have them] earnestly stopped up against all reviling and the foulness of shameful words;
卻對一切辱罵及污穢言語之醜陋,竭力堵塞;
1:559
[and to have] the tongue consecrated by the good report of others, in no way defiled by insults and reviling against others.
And simply, to sum it up in a word: let us reshape all the members, both of the body and of the soul, according to what seems good to the Spirit.
and our whole aim, according to piety, may be set aright.
Examining ourselves with all exactness concerning these things, O blessed one, if we find that we possess them, let us diligently preserve them;
這些事,蒙福者啊,我們當以一切精確察驗自己:若發現我們確實擁有,就當殷勤保守;
1:563
but if we find that we have acquired none of these, let us labour zealously to acquire them, humbling ourselves before all men, as men, for the sake of God and our common nature;
但若發現我們一無所得,就當殷勤竭力去獲得,為了神的緣故,也為了人類共同的本性,如世人一般在眾人面前謙卑自己;
1:564
remaining gentle and mild toward whatever occurs contrary to our own intention;
面對違逆我們意念而發生的事,仍保持溫和柔順;
1:565
generous in giving to the poor, and hospitable toward strangers;
樂於施予貧窮之人,並樂意款待陌生之人;
1:566
ready, as far as possible, to give aid to those in need of protection;

1:571
long-suffering toward those who provoke us to anger;
對觸怒我們的人則恆久忍耐;
1:572
forgiving toward those who err;
對犯錯之人則寬容體諒;
1:573
becoming a consolation to those who grieve.
And, simply put, let us become all things to all men, both because of the fear of God and because of the anticipated threat of the judgments to come.
For without these enumerated things, there is absolutely no hope of salvation for anyone at all.
It is my longing for you that compels me to say these things, and more than these—
compelling me to converse with you in spirit, and, though absent, to be constrained to meet with you through letters.
But let us not receive the force of what is said carelessly;
但願我們不要輕率地領受這些話語的力量;
1:579
since, along with other things, we shall assuredly have such words as either our advocates or our accusers;
因為連同其他諸事,這些話語也必定會成為我們的辯護者或控告者;
1:580
both I who speak them, and those who hear them, on the fearsome day of discernment — whichever of the two it shall be, according to how we shall have been disposed toward them.
May it come to pass that all of us — both those who speak something of what is fitting, and those who hear it — be shown to be doers of all the divine words;
願我們眾人,無論是那說出當說之言者,或是聽者,都顯明為一切神聖話語的實行者;
1:582
and not merely hearers or speakers;
而不僅僅是聽者或說者;
1:583
by the grace of Christ our God and Saviour, who called us unto his own glory and kingdom.
By the same, to Constantine.

1:585
If, as he has written, my blessed lord truly rejoices through my letters as though meeting with me in person, it is clear that in receiving my words he assuredly rejoices altogether.
Now the acceptance of words is the disposition of the one who accepts the words, [conformed] to those words.
And the exact proof of this disposition is the deed [that manifests] the power inherent in the words.
and I will never restrain my lips, according to what is written, from saying to him the things that can profit both him and me and others;
而我必不禁止我的嘴唇,正如經上所記,不去對他說那些能使他、使我、也使他人得益的話;
1:589
insofar as I am able to receive the grace concerning understanding wisely and speaking piously the things understood — [a grace] bestowed by God, who gives to all simply, and without reproach.
Let us therefore become, beloved, eager doers of the works commanded [by God];
所以,親愛的,讓我們成為那按誡命而行之工的熱切實行者;
1:591
and let us flee the deceit of this age, and let us not bind our soul to any of the things reputed pleasant within it.
For the world passes away, and all things in it wither, being by nature but the wastage consumed by corruption.
This eagerness for divine things, on the part of those who aspire to salvation, is evidenced not only by hatred of sin and a quiet, unmeddling way of life;
而這渴慕得救之人對神聖事物的熱切,其明證不僅在於對罪的憎恨,以及清靜不惹事的生活方式;
1:594
but also by estrangement from wicked men, and by the soul's aversion toward all things that are perishing;
也在於與邪惡之人的疏遠,以及靈魂對一切正朽壞之物的厭離;
1:595
and by contempt of the flesh for virtue's sake, and by a firm and unyielding self-mastery against all things that deceitfully fawn upon the soul through the senses;
也在於為德行之故而輕視肉體,並以堅定不移的節制,抵抗那藉感官諂媚欺哄靈魂的一切事物;
1:596
through which we wither away all unbridled desires;
藉此我們使一切放縱無度的慾望枯萎;
1:597
and we lull to rest the disorderly movements of anger, not allowing the reasoning faculty, once enslaved, to be swept away together with them, and, like a charioteer seized by unruly horses, to be carried down into chasms;
並平息忿怒那紊亂的動變,不容那被奴役的念頭與之一同被捲走,如同御者被難以駕馭之馬所劫持,被拖曳墜入深壑;
1:598
there being no one to command and to restrain the irrational impulse of the beasts yoked to the chariot.
But also by endurance and steadfastness toward all involuntary trials;
還在於面對一切非自願之試煉時所存的忍耐與堅忍;
1:600
by which, even while suffering bodily, we remain unmoved in soul, and unconquered;
藉此,即便肉身受苦,我們的靈魂仍保持不動於情、不被征服;
1:601
being cast down by none of the things that assail us.
For instance, discerning prudence, [arrayed] against both ignorance and superstition;
例如:具知識之明智,用以對抗無知與迷信;
1:603
courage, against both cowardice and rash recklessness;
勇敢,用以對抗怯懦與魯莽的膽大妄為;
1:604
temperance, against licentiousness and folly;
節制,用以對抗放縱與愚昧;
1:605
justice, against injustice;
公義,用以對抗不義;
1:606
I mean, against taking more than one's due, and taking less than one's due;
我是指,用以對抗過取(多佔)與虧取(少佔);
1:607
arming ourselves with humility against pride;
以謙卑武裝自己,用以對抗驕傲;
1:608
putting forward condescension against haughtiness;
展現體恤遷就之心,用以對抗自高自大;
1:609
moderation, against conceit;
節度,用以對抗自負;
1:610
long-suffering, against faintheartedness;
恆久忍耐,用以對抗心灰意冷;
1:611
cleaving to cheerful giving toward those in need;
持守著以喜樂之心賙濟有需要的人;
1:612
diligently attending to hospitality, brotherly love, and love of mankind;
殷勤留意於待客之道、弟兄之愛,以及仁愛待人;
1:613
pursuing peace and love;
追求和平與愛;
1:614
in which, as in a certain foundation of all good things, all the goods bestowed upon men from God are gathered and kept safe.
These things, my blessed lord, everyone who loves the kingdom of heaven, and hastens to flee the experience of the eternal punishments threatened against sinners, assuredly strives, according to his power, both to do and to keep;
這些事,我蒙福的主上啊,凡愛慕天國、並急切逃避那威嚇罪人之永刑經歷的人,必定竭盡己力,致力於既遵行又保守這些事;
1:616
having as a helper toward the keeping of these things the unforgetting remembrance of death, and of the uncertainty attending it;
以那不曾忘懷的紀念——即對死亡、以及死亡之不可預知性的紀念——作為持守這些事的助力;
1:617
and of the desolation that follows the soul's departure, bringing with it nothing else but the conscience branded on account of the evil deeds it has done;
以及對靈魂離世之後那荒涼淒清境況的紀念——那境況本身別無所帶,唯有因己身所犯惡行而受烙印的良心;
1:618
and the thought of the fearsome scrutiny of it by the evil spirits that will take place against it in this air;
以及對於惡靈將在這空中對靈魂施行之可畏審查的意念;
1:619
and the reflection on the bitter and lightless confinement of souls now in Hades;
以及對靈魂如今在陰間那苦澀無光之幽禁境況的沉思;
1:620
These things, and more than these, I have already written to the best of my ability, and I shall not cease writing, so far as I am able, since I hold this desire for my beloved lord, that he become one who carries such words into effect.
But let us be sober, and let us keep watch over our own guard, O blessed one;
但願我們儆醒謹守,蒙福者啊,留意保守自己;
1:622
lest we be condemned all the more, for merely speaking and hearing divine things in vain and to no purpose.
Since indeed we shall render an account to God for these very words on the day of judgment;
因為就是為著這些話語,我們也必在審判之日向神交帳;
1:624
both I who speak them, and those who hear them —
if we leave them entirely idle and unfruitful.
but may it rather come to pass that all of us exult in all the words of God, and be shown to be doers of the divine and saving wills contained in them.
By the same, to the most holy and most blessed Archbishop John, concerning the fact that the soul is incorporeal.
Having received the honourable letter of your Perfection in virtue, adorned with every kind of magnanimous modesty, I was at once filled with admiration and astonishment;
我收到閣下(於德行臻於全備者)尊貴的書信,其中飾滿一切崇高的謙遜之美,我一時既讚嘆又驚異;
1:629
and how, being of the same mind in both respects, you remain consistent with yourself;
也驚異你如何在這兩方面存著同一心思,卻始終與自己保持一致;
1:630
neither made unapproachable by the loftiness, nor rendered contemptible by the lowliness.
For, having wisely blended for yourself one form of virtue out of both, you paradoxically make the other to be seen within each.
1:632
in the humble, the lofty;
在謙卑中,見出崇高;
1:633
and in the lofty, conversely, humility.
Trusting again in the showers of your teaching, with which you refreshed me who was variously being scorched by ignorance,
who then are these who assert that there is no incorporeal creature,
and with what do they, opposing the truth of your words with baseless fabrications, contend against it?
And how is it that they, being more contentious than is fitting, were not put to shame by our argument, which is so utterly far removed from any extremely contentious reasoning?
I shall make this wise argument, an unconquerable ally of the truth, the firstfruits of my own [words];
我要將此一智慧的論證──真理那無可戰勝的盟友──作為我自己論述的初熟果子;
1:639
priding myself, as it were, on your own methodical approaches.
If the body is, by its own nature, immovable;
假若身體按其自身本性乃是不動的;
1:641
and the soul too is a body—even if, as they say, the most fine-textured [body]—then, insofar as it is a body, it will not be moved.
And if these things are so, whence comes motion to us?
And this [regress would continue] to infinity, until we arrive at an incorporeal creature.
But if they should say that we are moved by God according to a first principle;
但若他們說,我們是依照第一原理而被神所推動;
1:645
since I know that most of our motions are absurd and shameful, they will of necessity be forced to declare that the divine is by all means the cause of these too.
And again, if every bodily existence whatsoever, according to the true account, being distinguished by quantity and quality, in bulk and form, and surface and shape, bounds the contemplation concerning itself, as being marked out by necessary limits;
再者,假若一切物體性的存在,無論如何,按真確的道理,皆以量與質、以體積與形式、以表面與形狀而被劃分,並藉此界定了對其自身的認識──彷彿被必然的界限所劃定;
1:647
for one who investigates it could not imagine anything outside these;
因為研究它的人,決無法設想出任何在此之外的東西;
1:648
and if the soul is a body, it is by all means circumscribed either out of these, or [is] these, or some [of these], or something of these, or by these, or by some [of these], or by something of these;
而靈魂若是身體,便必然要被此等要素所限定──或由此構成、或即是此等、或是其中若干、或是其中某物、或由此等所限、或由其中若干所限、或由其中某物所限;
1:649
but [the soul] is neither out of these, nor is it these, nor some [of these], nor anything of these, nor is it circumscribed by these, nor by some [of these], nor by anything of these;
然而〔靈魂〕既不由此等構成,也不即是此等,也不是其中若干,也不是其中某物,也不由此等所限,不由其中若干所限,也不由其中某物所限;
1:650
If, then, that the soul exists is not disputed by them;
既然靈魂之存在,連他們也不爭論;
1:651
yet it exists as none of the things which the concept comprehends—[none of] those out of which, or of which, bodies consist;
然而它存在,卻不是意念所能把握的任何一物──即那些身體所由構成、或所是的一切;
1:652
not color, not shape, not solidity, not weight, not magnitude, not extension into three [dimensions];
既非顏色,亦非形狀,亦非阻力,亦非重量,亦非大小,亦非三向度的延展;
1:653
and, simply put, being none whatsoever of the things comprehended concerning bodily nature;
簡言之,凡屬物體性本性所把握的一切,它一概皆非;
1:654
being none of these—as our argument has shown—it will certainly be incorporeal, if indeed it exists.
Furthermore, if every contraction and expansion and division belongs to bodies;
此外,假若一切收縮、擴張與分割皆屬於物體;
1:656
and that which is free from every contraction and expansion and any division whatsoever is certainly incorporeal, then the soul is therefore incorporeal, as being wholly incapable of receiving all these things.
If all bodily substance is divided into the ensouled and the unensouled;
假若一切物體性的本質皆分為有靈魂者與無靈魂者;
1:658
and the soul is a body, it will certainly be either ensouled or unensouled.
But if it is ensouled, it will certainly be ensouled through something that ensouls it—either a substance, or a power, or an accident.
But to say that the soul itself is ensouled [by another], just as [one might say] that light is illumined, or that fire is heated, is altogether ridiculous.
And if we should say that it is a substance that ensouls the soul, we shall again have to say that this [substance] is either a body or incorporeal.
And if it is a body, the same absurd approaches of reasoning, [proceeding] from absurdity to absurdity, will be met by the argument stated before this, until it is agreed together that the soul is incorporeal.
But if we should say that it is a power, or rather a quality, that ensouls the soul—[a power] that gives life to, and is motive of, the substance—it will be involuntary and without real subsistence.
[This is] in addition to [the fact that] the distinction according to ruling and being ruled would thereby be both reversed and contrary to nature;
此外,〔如此一來〕依照「統治」與「被統治」而有的區分,便會既被顛倒、又違反本性;
1:665
since indeed the soul—created by nature to rule the body, as an incorporeal substance—will, according to them, being a body, be ruled by that which does not exist according to substance;
因為靈魂本是按本性被造來統治身體的,乃是作為無形的本質;然而依他們之見,靈魂既是身體,便要被那不按本質而存在者所統治;
1:666
I mean, it will be ruled by the power that exists according to quality—
[the soul,] which itself exists and subsists according to substance—contrary to the common preconception held by all.
But if we should say the soul is an unensouled body, it will be without sensation and without imagination, irrational and without understanding.
But indeed all these [faculties] both exist and are seen concerning the soul, and in the soul;
然而這一切〔官能〕,實實在在地既存在於靈魂之中,也顯現於靈魂之中,且能被看見;
1:670
for we do not refuse to say—knowing well how to speak—that it has this, a body of a different substance [from its own];
因為我們深知如何言說,故不拒絕承認:靈魂擁有這個──一個與〔靈魂〕本質相異的身體;
1:671
but to declare that it itself is a body—as being most rash and at the same time most uneducated—we utterly avoid;
但要宣稱靈魂本身即是身體──那實在是既最魯莽、又最無知的說法──我們則完全避而不言;
1:672
not being ignorant that 'to be' differs greatly from 'to have'.
But if it is because they call the Divine incorporeal, fearing a fear that does not exist, that they do not admit to calling the soul incorporeal, lest they should bring it to equality with God;
但若他們是因為稱那神聖者為無形的,卻懷著一種本不存在的恐懼,才不肯承認靈魂也是無形的,唯恐因此便將靈魂等同於神;
1:674
then let them also excise the rest of our [attributes], so that their contest of folly may be complete for them—as many [attributes] as we, by participating, [receive] from God;
那麼就讓他們也一併削去我們其餘的〔種種名稱〕,好叫他們這場愚妄的競技得以完滿──即我們因分享而〔獲〕自神的那一切名稱;
1:675
[God] imparting [them], we were named [by them]; or God was named by us [with them].
'Being', 'living', 'being illumined', 'being made good', 'reasoning', 'understanding';
「是」、「活」、「被光照」、「被使良善」、「推理」、「理解」;
1:677
but these other [names are given] on account of motion, that is, intention and disposition.
For we are called 'beings', and 'living', and 'lights', and 'good', and 'intelligent', and 'rational';
因為我們被稱為「存在者」、「活者」、「光」、「善者」、「有智者」、「有理性者」;
1:679
and likewise we name God 'being' and 'living', and 'light', and 'good', and 'mind' and 'word';
同樣地,我們也稱神為「存在者」與「活者」,為「光」,為「善者」,為「心智」與「道」;
1:680
whether as being, and being called, these things from [Him as] cause;
無論是因〔祂為〕因由,我們才如此存在、也如此被稱呼;
1:681
or as being actualized [by Him], calling the Divine by these names on the basis of our own [attributes].
What reason, then, do they have [to say] that the soul both is, and is named, all these things, in addition to many others;
那麼,他們究竟有什麼道理,一方面承認靈魂在許多其他名稱之外,也是、也被稱以這一切名稱;
1:683
yet no longer [named] 'incorporeal', which is precisely what the Divine is called?
As if it were necessary either that we not be called these things, because the Divine [is so called], or that God not be named these things which we too [are named].
But indeed we are also these things;
然而我們確實也是這一切;
1:686
not as being identical with God on account of these things;
並非因這一切之故,便與神成為同一者;
1:687
but as an effect stands to its cause, or a participant to that which is participated in, or existence to [its] cause.
Nor comparatively or synonymously, as in the case of things of the same substance;
也不是如同本質者那般,以比較的方式或同義的方式而言;
1:689
but homonymously, and, so to speak, by way of participation;
而是以同名異義的方式,可以說是藉著分享而言;
1:690
the realities being infinitely separated from one another in nature;
因為諸實在彼此在本性上乃是無限相隔的;
1:691
unless one is pleased truly to say that the Divine is also above nature and above reality itself.
Where, then, again according to them, if it should be granted that the soul is a body, will the doctrine of 'according to the image' be preserved for us, unless we say that the soul has, in every respect, likeness to the archetype?
For just as we call the image, which is discerned in these respects, the [image] 'intelligent' of the intelligent [archetype], and [image] of the immortal, incorruptible, and invisible [archetype];
因為正如我們稱那在此等方面被認出的形像,為那有智者的「有智」形像,為那不朽者、不壞者、不可見者的形像;
1:694
so likewise, [we call it the image] of the incorporeal, calling it 'incorporeal', as likewise escaping all bulk and every dimensional measurement;
同樣地,〔我們也稱之為〕那無形者的形像,稱它為「無形的」,因它同樣逃脫一切體積與任何度量上的量測;
1:695
yet again we say that it is, according to the property of [its] nature, something other than that [archetype].
Since otherwise it would no longer be an image, but an unvarying identity.
And in whatever respects that [attribute] is beheld in the uncreated, unchangeable, and beginningless nature, in those very same respects [we believe] the created rational nature [is beheld] too;
而那在無始、不變、非受造的本性中所見的一切,我們也相信,在受造的理性本性中,同樣可以在相同的各方面見到;
1:698
not, however, in the same manner, but—just as in the farthest echoes of a voice a disclosure of the word is shown—we clearly believe it is displayed [in that fashion].
