Did they, then, seize one who was unwilling, or one who did not know what he would suffer? Yet he is seen to have foreknown the Passion, and the audacious deeds of the Jews' impiety toward God; indeed, through the holy prophets he once said:
Then, though it lay in his power to escape the snares, he willingly gave his own body over to death for a short while, that, being raised from the dead, he might destroy the power of death; that he might paralyze the envy of the devil, through whom death had crept into human nature; that he might recast us for incorruption and unending life.
die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. He was indeed raised on the third day, having despoiled Hades, and, returning to heaven, he is enthroned beside his own Father.
Since, then, we are about to give an account to the Judge, let us cast off all hesitation, and run beyond the reach of every sin, and, all but bidding farewell to the distractions of the present life, let us practice righteousness, self-control, love, and love for the poor; let us visit those in bonds, restore those in bodily sickness, help orphans, take pity on the widow's tear, and love one another fervently.
