31:1 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἀγρυπνία πλούτου ἐκτήκει σάρκας καὶ ἡ μέριμνα αὐτοῦ ἀφιστᾷ ὕπνον
Vigilia honestatis tabefaciet carnes , et cogitatus illius auferet somnum .
ብእሲሰ ፡ አብድ ፡ ከንቶ ፡ ይሴፈዋ ፡ ለሐሰት ፡ ወሕልምኒ ፡ ያደነግጾ ፡ ለአብድ ።
Wakefulness that comes of riches consumes the flesh, And the anxiety thereof puts away sleep.
31:2 ⧉ ⤴︎ μέριμνα ἀγρυπνίας ἀποστήσει νυσταγμόν καὶ ἀρρώστημα βαρὺ ἐκνήψει ὕπνον
Cogitatus præscientiæ avertit sensum , et infirmitas gravis sobriam facit animam .
ከመ ፡ ዘይፀብጥ ፡ ጽላሎተ ፡ ወከመ ፡ ዘይዴግን ፡ ነፋሰ ፡ ከማሁ ፡ ዘይትአመን ፡ ሕልመ ።
Wakeful anxiety will crave slumber; And in a sore disease sleep will be broken.
31:3 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἐκοπίασεν πλούσιος ἐν συναγωγῇ χρημάτων καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀναπαύσει ἐμπίμπλαται τῶν τρυφημάτων αὐτοῦ
Laboravit dives in congregatione substantiæ , et in requie sua replebitur bonis suis .
እምዝንቱ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ዝንቱ ፡ ይትፋለስ ፡ ሕልመ ፡ ወበበ ፡ አምሳለ ፡ ገጹ ፡ ያርእየከ ፡ ዘዘዚአሁ ።
A rich man toileth in gathering money together; And when he rests, he is filled with his good things.
31:4 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἐκοπίασεν πτωχὸς ἐν ἐλαττώσει βίου καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀναπαύσει ἐπιδεὴς γίνεται
Laboravit pauper in diminutione victus , et in fine inops fit .
እምውስተ ፡ ርኵስ ፡ ምንት ፡ ይወፅእ ፡ ንጹሕ ፡ ወበውስተ ፡ ሐሰት ፡ በአይቴ ፡ ይትረክብ ፡ ጽድቅ ።
A poor man toileth in lack of substance; And when he rests, he becomes needy.
31:5 ⧉ ⤴︎ ὁ ἀγαπῶν χρυσίον οὐ δικαιωθήσεται καὶ ὁ διώκων διάφορα ἐν αὐτοῖς πλανηθήσεται
Qui aurum diligit non justificabitur , et qui insequitur consumptionem replebitur ex ea .
ሕልም ፡ ወሰገል ፡ ወመቅሰም ፡ ከንቱ ፡ ኵሎሙ ፡ ወያደነግጹ ፡ ልብ ፡ ወይቀንዑ ፡ ከመ ፡ ማሕምም ።
He that loves gold shall not be justified; And he that follows destruction shall himself have his fill of it.
31:6 ⧉ ⤴︎ πολλοὶ ἐδόθησαν εἰς πτῶμα χάριν χρυσίου καὶ ἐγενήθη ἡ ἀπώλεια αὐτῶν κατὰ πρόσωπον αὐτῶν
Multi dati sunt in auri casus , et facta est in specie ipsius perditio illorum .
ለእመ ፡ ኢኮነ ፡ እምኀበ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ዘተፈነወ ፡ እመ ፡ ይሣሀል ፡ ኢትደዮ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ልብከ ።
Many have been given over to ruin for the sake of gold; And their perdition meets them face to face.
31:7 ⧉ ⤴︎ ξύλον προσκόμματός ἐστιν τοῖς ἐνθουσιάζουσιν αὐτῷ καὶ πᾶς ἄφρων ἁλώσεται ἐν αὐτῷ
Lignum offensionis est aurum sacrificantium : væ illis qui sectantur illud ! et omnis imprudens deperiet in illo .
እስመ ፡ ለብዙኃን ፡ አስሐቶሙ ፡ ሕልም ፡ ወወደቁ ፡ እንዘ ፡ ኪያሁ ፡ ይሴፈው ።
It is a stumbling block to those who sacrifice to it; And every fool shall be taken therewith.
31:8 ⧉ ⤴︎ μακάριος πλούσιος ὃς εὑρέθη ἄμωμος καὶ ὃς ὀπίσω χρυσίου οὐκ ἐπορεύθη
Beatus dives qui inventus est sine macula , et qui post aurum non abiit , nec speravit in pecunia et thesauris .
እሙነ ፡ ይበጽሕ ፡ ዘእምኀበ ፡[እግዚአብሔር ፡]፡ ዘእንበለ ፡ ሐሰት ፡ ወጥዩቀ ፡ ይከውን ፡ ቃለ ፡ ጽድቅ ።
Blessed is the rich that is found without blemish, And that goes not after gold.
31:9 ⧉ ⤴︎ τίς ἐστιν καὶ μακαριοῦμεν αὐτόν ἐποίησεν γὰρ θαυμάσια ἐν λαῷ αὐτοῦ
Quis est hic ? et laudabimus eum : fecit enim mirabilia in vita sua .
ብእሲ ፡ ምሁር ፡ ተግሣጸ ፡ ብዙኀ ፡ ያአምር ፡ ወዘፈድፋደ ፡ ሐመመ ፡ ጥበበ ፡ ይነርግ ።
Who is he? and we will call him blessed: For wonderful things has he done among his people.
31:10 ⧉ ⤴︎ τίς ἐδοκιμάσθη ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐτελειώθη καὶ ἔσται αὐτῷ εἰς καύχησιν τίς ἐδύνατο παραβῆναι καὶ οὐ παρέβη καὶ ποιῆσαι κακὰ καὶ οὐκ ἐποίησεν
Qui probatus est in illo , et perfectus est , erit illi gloria æterna : qui potuit transgredi , et non est transgressus ; facere mala , et non fecit .
ወዘሰ ፡ ኢትጐድአ ፡ አልቦ ፡ ዘየአምር ።
Who has been tried thereby, and found perfect? Then let him glory. Who has had the power to transgress, and has not transgressed? And to do evil, and has not done it?
31:11 ⧉ ⤴︎ στερεωθήσεται τὰ ἀγαθὰ αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰς ἐλεημοσύνας αὐτοῦ ἐκδιηγήσεται ἐκκλησία
Ideo stabilita sunt bona illius in Domino , et eleemosynas illius enarrabit omnis ecclesia sanctorum .
ዘብዙኀ ፡ ተመንደበ ፡ ብዙኀ ፡ ይትሜ [የን ]።
His goods shall be made sure, And the congregation shall declare his alms.
31:12 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἐπὶ τραπέζης μεγάλης ἐκάθισας μὴ ἀνοίξῃς ἐπ’ αὐτῆς φάρυγγά σου καὶ μὴ εἴπῃς πολλά γε τὰ ἐπ’ αὐτῆς
Supra mensam magnam sedisti ? non aperias super illam faucem tuam prior .
ብዙኀ ፡ ርኢኩ ፡ አመ ፡ ተመንደብኩ ፡ ወበዝኀ ፡ ቃልየ ፡ እምነ ፡ ኅሊናየ ።
Sittest you at a great table? be not greedy upon it, And say not, Many are the things upon it.
31:13 ⧉ ⤴︎ μνήσθητι ὅτι κακὸν ὀφθαλμὸς πονηρός πονηρότερον ὀφθαλμοῦ τί ἔκτισται διὰ τοῦτο ἀπὸ παντὸς προσώπου δακρύει
Non dicas sic : Multa sunt , quæ super illam sunt .
እስመ ፡ ዘልፈ ፡ እትመነደብ ፡ ወእበጽሕ ፡ ለሞት ፡ ወእንበይነዝ ፡ ያድኅነኒ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ።
Remember that an evil eye is a wicked thing: What has been created more evil than an eye? Therefore it sheds tears from every face.
31:14 ⧉ ⤴︎ οὗ ἐὰν ἐπιβλέψῃ μὴ ἐκτείνῃς χεῖρα καὶ μὴ συνθλίβου αὐτῷ ἐν τρυβλίῳ
Memento quoniam malus est oculus nequam .
ነፍስ ፡ እንተ ፡ ትፈርሆ ፡ ለእግዚአብሔር ፡ ተሐዩ ።
Stretch not your hand wherever it looks, And thrust not yourself with it into the dish.
31:15 ⧉ ⤴︎ νόει τὰ τοῦ πλησίον ἐκ σεαυτοῦ καὶ ἐπὶ παντὶ πράγματι διανοοῦ
Nequius oculo quid creatum est ? ideo ab omni facie sua lacrimabitur , cum viderit .
ወይድኅኑ ፡ ኵሎሙ ፡ እለ ፡ ይሴፈው ፡ ኪያሁ ።
Consider your neighbor’s liking by your own; And be discreet in every point.
31:16 ⧉ ⤴︎ φάγε ὡς ἄνθρωπος τὰ παρακείμενά σοι καὶ μὴ διαμασῶ μὴ μισηθῇς
Ne extendas manum tuam prior , et invidia contaminatus erubescas .
ለፈራሄ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ አልቦ ፡ ዘይጌርሞ ፡ ወኢይደነግጽ ፡ እስመ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ተስፋሁ ።
Eat, as becomes a man, those things which are set before you; And eat not greedily, lest you be hated.
31:17 ⧉ ⤴︎ παῦσαι πρῶτος χάριν παιδείας καὶ μὴ ἀπληστεύου μήποτε προσκόψῃς
Ne comprimaris in convivio .
ብፅዕት ፡ ነፍስ ፡ እንተ ፡ ትፈርሆ ፡ ለእግዚአብሔር ።
Be first to leave off for manners’ sake; And be not insatiable, lest you offend.
31:18 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ εἰ ἀνὰ μέσον πλειόνων ἐκάθισας πρότερος αὐτῶν μὴ ἐκτείνῃς τὴν χεῖρά σου
Intellige quæ sunt proximi tui ex teipso .
እስመ ፡ ላዕሌሁ ፡ ያሰክም ፡ ወውእቱ ፡ ምእመኑ ።
And if you sit among many, Reach not out your hand before them.
31:19 ⧉ ⤴︎ ὡς ἱκανὸν ἀνθρώπῳ πεπαιδευμένῳ τὸ ὀλίγον καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς κοίτης αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἀσθμαίνει
Utere quasi homo frugi his quæ tibi apponuntur : ne , cum manducas multum , odio habearis .
አዕይንቲሁ ፡ ለእግዚአብሔር ፡ ኀበ ፡ እለ ፡ ያፈቅርዎ ፡ ምእመን ፡ ኀይሉ ፡ ወጽኑፅ ፡ ምስማኩ ። ያቈርር ፡ ለከ ፡ መርቄ ፡ ወይጼልለከ ፡ እምፀሓየ ፡ ቀትር ፡ የዐቅበከ ፡ እምዕቅፍት ፡ ወይረድአከ ፡ እምድቀት ።
How sufficient to a well-mannered man is a very little, And he does not breathe hard upon his bed.
31:20 ⧉ ⤴︎ ὕπνος ὑγιείας ἐπὶ ἐντέρῳ μετρίῳ ἀνέστη πρωί καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτοῦ πόνος ἀγρυπνίας καὶ χολέρας καὶ στρόφος μετὰ ἀνδρὸς ἀπλήστου
Cessa prior causa disciplinæ : et noli nimius esse , ne forte offendas .
ያዐብያ ፡ ለነፍስከ ፡ ወያበርሆን ፡ ለአዕይንቲከ ፡ ወይፌውስኒ ፡ ወይሁብ ፡ ሕይወተ ፡ ወያጸግብ ፡ በረከተ ።
Healthy sleep comes of moderate eating; He rises early, and his wits are with him: The pain of wakefulness, and colic, And griping, are with an insatiable man.
31:21 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ εἰ ἐβιάσθης ἐν ἐδέσμασιν ἀνάστα ἔμεσον πόρρω καὶ ἀναπαύσῃ
Et si in medio multorum sedisti , prior illis ne extendas manum tuam , nec prior poscas bibere .
ርኵስ ፡ መሥዋዕቱ ፡ ለመባአ ፡ ዐመፃ ፡ ወግሙን ፡ ቊርባኖሙ ፡ ለኃጥኣን ።
And if you have been forced to eat, Rise up in the midst thereof, and you shall have rest.
31:22 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἄκουσόν μου τέκνον καὶ μὴ ἐξουδενήσῃς με καὶ ἐπ’ ἐσχάτων εὑρήσεις τοὺς λόγους μου ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἔργοις σου γίνου ἐντρεχής καὶ πᾶν ἀρρώστημα οὐ μή σοι ἀπαντήσῃ
Quam sufficiens est homini erudito vinum exiguum ! et in dormiendo non laborabis ab illo , et non senties dolorem .
ወኢይትወከፎሙ ፡ መባኦሙ ፡ ለረሲዓን ።
Hear me, my son, and despise me not, And at the last you shall find my words true: In all your works be quick, And no disease shall come to you.
31:23 ⧉ ⤴︎ λαμπρὸν ἐπ’ ἄρτοις εὐλογήσει χείλη καὶ ἡ μαρτυρία τῆς καλλονῆς αὐτοῦ πιστή
Vigilia , cholera et tortura viro infrunito ,
አኮ ፡ በብዝኀ ፡ መባእከ ፡ ዘይትኀደግ ፡ ለከ ፡ ኀጢአትከ ።
Him that is liberal of his meat the lips shall bless; And the testimony of his excellence shall be believed.
31:24 ⧉ ⤴︎ πονηρῷ ἐπ’ ἄρτῳ διαγογγύσει πόλις καὶ ἡ μαρτυρία τῆς πονηρίας αὐτοῦ ἀκριβής
somnus sanitatis in homine parco : dormiet usque mane , et anima illius cum ipso delectabitur .
ከመ ፡ ዘይቀትሎ ፡ ለሕፃን ፡ በቅድመ ፡ አቡሁ ፡ ከማሁ ፡ ዘበንዋየ ፡ ዐመፃ ፡ ያበውእ ፡ መባእ ።
Him that is a niggard of his meat the city shall murmur at; And the testimony of his niggardness shall be sure.
31:25 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἐν οἴνῳ μὴ ἀνδρίζου πολλοὺς γὰρ ἀπώλεσεν ὁ οἶνος
Et si coactus fueris in edendo multum , surge e medio , evome , et refrigerabit te , et non adduces corpori tuo infirmitatem .
ሕይወቱ ፡ ለነዳይ ፡ ስኢለ ፡ ምጽዋት ፡ ወዘሰ ፡ አበዮ ፡ ቀታሌ ፡ ነፍስ ፡ ውእቱ ።
Show not yourself valiant in wine; For wine has destroyed many.
31:26 ⧉ ⤴︎ κάμινος δοκιμάζει στόμωμα ἐν βαφῇ οὕτως οἶνος καρδίας ἐν μάχῃ ὑπερηφάνων
Audi me , fili , et ne spernas me , et in novissimo invenies verba mea .
ከመ ፡ ዘቀተለ ፡ ቢጾ ፡ ዘፈለጠ ፡ ብእሴ ፡ እምብእሲቱ ።
The furnace proves the temper of steel by dipping; So does wine prove hearts in the quarreling of the proud.
31:27 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἔφισον ζωῆς οἶνος ἀνθρώποις ἐὰν πίνῃς αὐτὸν ἐν μέτρῳ αὐτοῦ τίς ζωὴ ἐλασσουμένῳ οἴνῳ καὶ αὐτὸς ἔκτισται εἰς εὐφροσύνην ἀνθρώποις
In omnibus operibus tuis esto velox , et omnis infirmitas non occurret tibi .
ወዘሄደ ፡ ዐስቦ ፡ ለዐሳቡ ፡ ከዐወ ፡ ደሞ ።
Wine is as good as life to men, If you drink it in its measure: What life is there to a man that is without wine? And it has been created to make men glad.
31:28 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἀγαλλίαμα καρδίας καὶ εὐφροσύνη ψυχῆς οἶνος πινόμενος ἐν καιρῷ αὐτάρκης
Splendidum in panibus benedicent labia multorum , et testimonium veritatis illius fidele .
ሶበ ፡ ፩ዱ ፡ የሐንጽ ፡ ወካልኡ ፡ ይነሥት ፡ ምንተ ፡ በቊዐ ፡ ጻማሆሙ ፡ ለክልኤሆሙ ።
Wine drunk in season and to satisfy Is joy of heart, and gladness of soul:
31:29 ⧉ ⤴︎ πικρία ψυχῆς οἶνος πινόμενος πολὺς ἐν ἐρεθισμῷ καὶ ἀντιπτώματι
Nequissimo in pane murmurabit civitas , et testimonium nequitiæ illius verum est .
ሶበ ፡ ፩ዱ ፡ ይድኅር ፡ ወካልኡ ፡ ይረግም ፡ ለመኑ ፡ እምውስተ ፡ ክልኤሆሙ ፡ ይሰምዖሙ ፡ ቃሎሙ ።
Wine drunk largely is bitterness of soul, With provocation and conflict.
31:30 ⧉ ⤴︎ πληθύνει μέθη θυμὸν ἄφρονος εἰς πρόσκομμα ἐλαττῶν ἰσχὺν καὶ προσποιῶν τραύματα
Diligentes in vino noli provocare : multos enim exterminavit vinum .
ዘይትኀፀብ ፡ እምድኅር ፡ ገሲሶ ፡ በድነ ፡ ወካዕበ ፡ ይደግም ፡ ገሲሶ ፡ ምንተ ፡ በቊዖ ፡ ተኀፅቦ ።
Drunkenness increases the rage of a fool to his hurt; It diminishes strength, and adds wounds.
31:31 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἐν συμποσίῳ οἴνου μὴ ἐλέγξῃς τὸν πλησίον καὶ μὴ ἐξουθενήσῃς αὐτὸν ἐν εὐφροσύνῃ αὐτοῦ λόγον ὀνειδισμοῦ μὴ εἴπῃς αὐτῷ καὶ μὴ αὐτὸν θλίψῃς ἐν ἀπαιτήσει
Ignis probat ferrum durum : sic vinum corda superborum arguet in ebrietate potatum .
ከማሁ ፡ ሰብእ ፡ ዘይጸውም ፡ እንበይነ ፡ ኀጢአቱ ፡ ወካዕበ ፡ የሐውር ፡ ዳግመ ፡ የአብስ ። መኑ ፡ እንከ ፡ ይሰምዖ ፡ ጸሎቶ ፡ ሎቱ ፡ ወምንተ ፡ በቊዖ ፡ አሕምሞ ፡ ነፍሶ ።
Rebuke not your neighbor at a banquet of wine, Neither set him at nothing in his mirth: Speak not to him a word of reproach, And press not upon him by asking back a debt.
