He commanded that she should be brought in where his silver vessels were set, and asked that his servants should prepare some of his own meats for her, and that she should drink from his own wine.
12:2
καὶ εἶπεν Ιουδιθ οὐ φάγομαι ἐξ αὐτῶν ἵνα μὴ γένηται σκάνδαλον ἀλλ’ ἐκ τῶν ἠκολουθηκότων μοι χορηγηθήσεται
Cui respondit Judith, et dixit : Nunc non potero manducare ex his quæ mihi præcipis tribui, ne veniat super me offensio : ex his autem quæ mihi detuli, manducabo.
ወትቤ፡ ዮዲት፡ ኢይበልዕ፡ እምኔሁ፡ ከመ፡ ኢይኩነኒ፡ ጌጋየ፡ አላ፡ እምነ፡ ዘአምጻዕኩ፡ እሴሰይ።
And Judith said, “I will not eat of it, lest there be an occasion of stumbling: but provision will be made for me of the things that have come with me.”
12:3
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὴν Ολοφέρνης ἐὰν δὲ ἐκλίπῃ τὰ ὄντα μετὰ σοῦ πόθεν ἐξοίσομέν σοι δοῦναι ὅμοια αὐτοῖς οὐ γάρ ἐστιν μεθ’ ἡμῶν ἐκ τοῦ γένους σου
Cui Holofernes ait : Si defecerint tibi ista, quæ tecum detulisti, quid faciemus tibi ?
ወይቤላ፡ ሆሎፎርኒስ፡ ወእመሰ፡ ኀልቀ፡ ዘአምጻእኪ፡ ምስሌኪ፡ እምአይቴ፡ ናመጽእ፡ ለኪ፡ ዘንሁበኪ፡ ዘከማሁ፡ ወእምነ፡ ሕዝብኪ፡ አልቦ፡ ዘሀሎ፡ ምስሌነ።
And Holofernes said to her, “But if the things that are with you should fail, from where will we be able to give you more like it? For there is none of your race with us.”
12:4
καὶ εἶπεν Ιουδιθ πρὸς αὐτόν ζῇ ἡ ψυχή σου κύριέ μου ὅτι οὐ δαπανήσει ἡ δούλη σου τὰ ὄντα μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἕως ἂν ποιήσῃ κύριος ἐν χειρί μου ἃ ἐβουλεύσατο
Et dixit Judith : Vivit anima tua, domine meus, quoniam non expendet omnia hæc ancilla tua, donec faciat Deus in manu mea hæc quæ cogitavi. Et induxerunt illam servi ejus in tabernaculum quod præceperat.
ወትቤሎ፡ ዮዲት፡ ሕያው፡ ነድስከ፡ እግዚእየ፡ ከመ፡ ኢይትዌድእ፡ አመትከ፡ ዘሀለወ፡ ምስሌሃ፡ እስከ፡ አመ፡ ይገብር፡ እግዚአብሔር፡ ዘመከረ፡ በእዴየ።
And Judith said to him, “As your soul lives, my lord, your servant will not spend those things that are with me, until the Lord works by my hand the things that he has determined.”
12:5
καὶ ἠγάγοσαν αὐτὴν οἱ θεράποντες Ολοφέρνου εἰς τὴν σκηνήν καὶ ὕπνωσεν μέχρι μεσούσης τῆς νυκτός καὶ ἀνέστη πρὸς τὴν ἑωθινὴν φυλακήν
Et petiit dum introiret, ut daretur ei copia nocte et ante lucem egrediendi foras ad orationem, et deprecandi Dominum.
ወአብእዋ፡ ደቂቀ፡ ሆሎፎርኒስ፡ ውስተ፡ ደብተራ፡ ወቤተት፡ ወኖመት፡ እስከ፡ መንፈቀ፡ ሌሊት።
Then Holofernes’ servants brought her into the tent, and she slept until midnight. Then she rose up toward the morning watch,
12:6
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς Ολοφέρνην λέγουσα ἐπιταξάτω δὴ ὁ κύριός μου ἐᾶσαι τὴν δούλην σου ἐπὶ προσευχὴν ἐξελθεῖν
Et præcepit cubiculariis suis ut sicut placeret illi, exiret et introiret ad adorandum Deum suum per triduum :
ወተንሥአት፡ በሰዓት፡ ወእምድኅረ፡ ንቅሐተ፡ ሌሊት፡ ለአከት፡ ኀቤሁ፡ ለሆሎፎርኒስ፡ እንዘ፡ ትብል፡ አዝዝ፡ እግዚእየ፡ ያብሕዋ፡ ትፃእ፡ አመትከ።
and sent to Holofernes, saying, “Let my lord now command that they allow your servant to go out to pray.”
12:7
καὶ προσέταξεν Ολοφέρνης τοῖς σωματοφύλαξιν μὴ διακωλύειν αὐτήν καὶ παρέμεινεν ἐν τῇ παρεμβολῇ ἡμέρας τρεῖς καὶ ἐξεπορεύετο κατὰ νύκτα εἰς τὴν φάραγγα Βαιτυλουα καὶ ἐβαπτίζετο ἐν τῇ παρεμβολῇ ἐπὶ τῆς πηγῆς τοῦ ὕδατος
et exibat noctibus in vallem Bethuliæ, et baptizabat se in fonte aquæ.
ወአዘዞሙ፡ ሆሎፎርኒስ፡ ለእለ፡ የዓቅብዋ፡ ከመ፡ ኢይክልእዋ፡ ወእምዝ፡ ነበረት፡ ሠሉሰ፡ መዋዕለ፡ ውስተ፡ ትዕይንት፡ ወትወጽእ፡ በሌሊት፡ ውስተ፡ ቈላተ፡ ቤጤልዋ፡ ወትጠመቅ፡ በትዕይን፡ ውስተ፡ ነቅዓ፡ ማይ።
Holofernes commanded his guards that they should not stop her. She stayed in the camp three days, and went out every night into the valley of Bethulia, and washed herself at the fountain of water in the camp.
12:8
καὶ ὡς ἀνέβη ἐδέετο τοῦ κυρίου θεοῦ Ισραηλ κατευθῦναι τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτῆς εἰς ἀνάστημα τῶν υἱῶν τοῦ λαοῦ αὐτοῦ
Et ut ascendebat, orabat Dominum Deum Israël ut dirigeret viam ejus ad liberationem populi sui.
ወሶበ፡ ተዓርግ፡ ትጼሊ፡ ኀበ፡ እግዚአብሔር፡ አምላከ፡ እሥራኤል፡ ያርትዕ፡ ፍኖታ፡ በዘኢይትነሥኡ፡ ደቂቀ፡ ሕዝባ።
And when she came up, she implored the Lord God of Israel to direct her way to the raising up of the children of his people.
12:9
καὶ εἰσπορευομένη καθαρὰ παρέμενεν ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ μέχρι οὗ προσηνέγκατο τὴν τροφὴν αὐτῆς πρὸς ἑσπέραν
Et introiens, munda manebat in tabernaculo usque dum acciperet escam suam in vespere.
ወእምዝ፡ ትገብእ፡ ወነበረት፡ ንጽሕት፡ ውስተ፡ ትዕይንት፡ ወሠርከ፡ ሠርከ፡ ትበልዕ።
She came in clean, and remained in the tent, until she ate her food toward evening.
12:10
καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τετάρτῃ ἐποίησεν Ολοφέρνης πότον τοῖς δούλοις αὐτοῦ μόνοις καὶ οὐκ ἐκάλεσεν εἰς τὴν κλῆσιν οὐδένα τῶν πρὸς ταῖς χρείαις
Et factum est, in quarto die Holofernes fecit cœnam servis suis, et dixit ad Vagao eunuchum suum : Vade, et suade Hebræam illam ut sponte consentiat habitare mecum.
ወእምዝ፡ አመ፡ ራብዕት፡ ዕለት፡ ገብረ፡ ሆሎፎርኒስ፡ ምሳሓ፡ ለአግብርቲሁ፡ ለባሕቲቱ፡ ወኢፀውዐ፡ ባዕደ፡ ሰብአ፡ ወኢመነሂ፡ ውስተ፡ ምሳሕ።
It came to pass on the fourth day, that Holofernes made a feast for his own servants only, and called none of the officers to the banquet.
12:11
καὶ εἶπεν Βαγώᾳ τῷ εὐνούχῳ ὃς ἦν ἐφεστηκὼς ἐπὶ πάντων τῶν αὐτοῦ πεῖσον δὴ πορευθεὶς τὴν γυναῖκα τὴν Εβραίαν ἥ ἐστιν παρὰ σοί τοῦ ἐλθεῖν πρὸς ἡμᾶς καὶ φαγεῖν καὶ πιεῖν μεθ’ ἡμῶν
Fœdum est enim apud Assyrios, si femina irrideat virum agendo ut immunis ab eo transeat.
ወይቤሎ፡ ለባግዋ፡ መጋቢሁ፡ ሕጽው፡ ዘኵሉ፡ ንዋዩ፡ ላዕሌሁ፡ አስፍጣ፡ ሊተ፡ ለዛቲ፡ ብእሲት፡ ዕብራዊት፡ እንተ፡ ኀቤከ፡ ከመ፡ ትምጻእ፡ ኀቤነ፡ ወትብላዕ፡ ወትስተይ፡ ምስሌነ፡ ሑር፡ ኀቤሃ፡ ተናገራ።
And he said to Bagoas the eunuch, who had charge over all that he had, “Go now, and persuade this Hebrew woman who is with you that she come to us, and eat and drink with us.
12:12
ἰδοὺ γὰρ αἰσχρὸν τῷ προσώπῳ ἡμῶν εἰ γυναῖκα τοιαύτην παρήσομεν οὐχ ὁμιλήσαντες αὐτῇ ὅτι ἐὰν ταύτην μὴ ἐπισπασώμεθα καταγελάσεται ἡμῶν
Tunc introivit Vagao ad Judith, et dixit : Non vereatur bona puella introire ad dominum meum, ut honorificetur ante faciem ejus, ut manducet cum eo, et bibat vinum in jucunditate.
እስመ፡ ኃፍረት፡ ለነ፡ እንተ፡ ከመ፡ ዛቲ፡ ብእሲት፡ ረኪበነ፡ እመ፡ ኢተናገርናሃ፡ ወእመ፡ ኢረከብናሃ፡ ለዛቲ፡ ይስሕቁነ።
For, behold, it is a shame for our person, if we shall let such a woman go, not having had her company; for if we don’t draw her to ourselves, she will laugh us to scorn.”
12:13
καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Βαγώας ἀπὸ προσώπου Ολοφέρνου καὶ εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτὴν καὶ εἶπεν μὴ ὀκνησάτω δὴ ἡ παιδίσκη ἡ καλὴ αὕτη ἐλθοῦσα πρὸς τὸν κύριόν μου δοξασθῆναι κατὰ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ καὶ πίεσαι μεθ’ ἡμῶν εἰς εὐφροσύνην οἶνον καὶ γενηθῆναι ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ ὡς θυγάτηρ μία τῶν υἱῶν Ασσουρ αἳ παρεστήκασιν ἐν οἴκῳ Ναβουχοδονοσορ
Cui Judith respondit : Quæ ego sum, ut contradicam domino meo ?
ወወፅአ፡ ባግዋ፡ እምኀቤሁ፡ ለሆሎፎርኒስ፡ ወቦአ፡ ኀቤሃ፡ ወይቤላ፡ ኢትትሐከዪ፡ ወለትየ፡ ሠናይት፡ መጺአ፡ ኀበ፡ እግዚእየ፡ ትትአኰቲ፡ በኀቤሁ፡ ወትስተዪ፡ ወይነ፡ ምስሌሁ፡ ወትትፈሥሒ፡ ወትኩኒዮ፡ ዮም፡ ከመ፡ አሐቲ፡ እምነ፡ አዋልደ፡ ደቂቀ፡ አሶር፡ እለ፡ ይቀውማ፡ ውስተ፡ ቤቱ፡ ለናቡከደነፆር።
Bagoas went from the presence of Holofernes, and came in to her, and said, “Let this fair lady not fear to come to my lord, and to be honored in his presence, and to drink wine and be merry with us, and to be made this day as one of the daughters of the children of Asshur, which wait in the house of Nebuchadnezzar.”
12:14
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Ιουδιθ καὶ τίς εἰμι ἐγὼ ἀντεροῦσα τῷ κυρίῳ μου ὅτι πᾶν ὃ ἔσται ἐν τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς αὐτοῦ ἀρεστόν σπεύσασα ποιήσω καὶ ἔσται τοῦτό μοι ἀγαλλίαμα ἕως ἡμέρας θανάτου μου
omne quod erit ante oculos ejus bonum et optimum, faciam. Quidquid autem illi placuerit, hoc mihi erit optimum omnibus diebus vitæ meæ.
ወትቤሎ፡ ዮዲት፡ ምንት፡ አነ፡ ወሚ፡ ዘመድየ፡ ከመ፡ እትዋሥኢ፡ ለእግዚእየ፡ ኵሎ፡ ዘአመከ፡ በቅድመ፡ አዕይንቲከ፡ እገብር፡ ፍጡነ፡ ወሊተ፡ ይከውነኒ፡ ትፍሥሕተ፡ እስከ፡ አመ፡ እመውት።
Judith said to him, “Who am I, that I should contradict my lord? For whatever would be pleasing in his eyes, I will do speedily, and this will be my joy to the day of my death.”
12:15
καὶ διαναστᾶσα ἐκοσμήθη τῷ ἱματισμῷ καὶ παντὶ τῷ κόσμῳ τῷ γυναικείῳ καὶ προσῆλθεν ἡ δούλη αὐτῆς καὶ ἔστρωσεν αὐτῇ κατέναντι Ολοφέρνου χαμαὶ τὰ κώδια ἃ ἔλαβεν παρὰ Βαγώου εἰς τὴν καθημερινὴν δίαιταν αὐτῆς εἰς τὸ ἐσθίειν κατακλινομένην ἐπ’ αὐτῶν
Et surrexit, et ornavit se vestimento suo, et ingressa stetit ante faciem ejus.
ወተንሥአት፡ ወተሠነየት፡ ወለብሰት፡ አልባሲሃ፡ ወተሠርገወት፡ ኵሎ፡ ሠርጐ፡ አንስት፡ ወሖረት፡ ምስሌሃ፡ ወለታ፡ ወነጸፈት፡ ላቲ፡ ውስተ፡ ምድር፡ ቅድሜሁ፡ ለሆሎፎርኒስ፡ ምስካቢሃ፡ ዘነሥአት፡ እምኀበ፡ ባግዋ፡ ዘነጸፈ፡ ላቲ፡ በውስተ፡ ማኅደራ፡ ዘዲቤሁ፡ ትረፍቅ፡ ሶበ፡ ትመስሕ።
She arose, and decked herself with her apparel and all her woman’s attire; and her servant went and laid fleeces on the ground for her next to Holofernes, which she had received from Bagoas for her daily use, that she might sit and eat upon them.
12:16
καὶ εἰσελθοῦσα ἀνέπεσεν Ιουδιθ καὶ ἐξέστη ἡ καρδία Ολοφέρνου ἐπ’ αὐτήν καὶ ἐσαλεύθη ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἦν κατεπίθυμος σφόδρα τοῦ συγγενέσθαι μετ’ αὐτῆς καὶ ἐτήρει καιρὸν τοῦ ἀπατῆσαι αὐτὴν ἀφ’ ἧς ἡμέρας εἶδεν αὐτήν
Cor autem Holofernes concussum est : erat enim ardens in concupiscentia ejus.
ወቦአት፡ ዮዲት፡ ወሰከበት፡ ወተሀውከ፡ ልቡ፡ ለሆሎፎርኒስ፡ ላዕሌሃ፡ ወፈተወት፡ ነፍሱ፡ ፈድፋደ፡ ይስክብ፡ ምስሌሃ፡ ወይጸንሕ፡ እምአመ፡ ርእያ፡ እስከ፡ ጊዜ፡ ያሰፍጣ።
Judith came in and sat down, and Holofernes’ heart was ravished with her. His soul was moved, and he exceedingly desired her company. He was watching for a time to deceive her, from the day that he had seen her.
12:17
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὴν Ολοφέρνης πίε δὴ καὶ γενήθητι μεθ’ ἡμῶν εἰς εὐφροσύνην
Et dixit ad eam Holofernes : Bibe nunc, et accumbe in jucunditate, quoniam invenisti gratiam coram me.
ወይቤላ፡ ሆሎፎርኒስ፡ ስተዪ፡ ምስሌነ፡ ወተፈሥሒ።
Holofernes said to her, “Drink now, and be merry with us.”
12:18
καὶ εἶπεν Ιουδιθ πίομαι δή κύριε ὅτι ἐμεγαλύνθη τὸ ζῆν μου ἐν ἐμοὶ σήμερον παρὰ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας τῆς γενέσεώς μου
Et dixit Judith : Bibam, domine, quoniam magnificata est anima mea hodie præ omnibus diebus meis.
ወትቤሎ፡ ዮዲት፡ እሰቲ፡ እግዚእየ፡ እስመ፡ ዐብየት፡ ዮም፡ ሕይወትየ፡ ላዕሌየ፡ እምነ፡ ኵሉ፡ መዋዕልየ፡ ዘአመ፡ ተወለድኩ።
Judith said, “I will drink now, my lord, because my life is magnified in me this day more than all the days since I was born.”
12:19
καὶ λαβοῦσα ἔφαγεν καὶ ἔπιεν κατέναντι αὐτοῦ ἃ ἡτοίμασεν ἡ δούλη αὐτῆς
Et accepit, et manducavit et bibit coram ipso ea quæ paraverat illi ancilla ejus.
ወነሥአት፡ ወሰትየት፡ ወበልዐት፡ በቅድሜሁ፡ ዘአስተዳለወት፡ ላቲ፡ አመታ።
Then she took and ate and drank before him what her servant had prepared.
12:20
καὶ ηὐφράνθη Ολοφέρνης ἀπ’ αὐτῆς καὶ ἔπιεν οἶνον πολὺν σφόδρα ὅσον οὐκ ἔπιεν πώποτε ἐν ἡμέρᾳ μιᾷ ἀφ’ οὗ ἐγεννήθη
Et jucundus factus est Holofernes ad eam, bibitque vinum multum nimis, quantum numquam biberat in vita sua.
ወተፈሥሐ፡ ሆሎፎርኒስ፡ በእንቲአሃ፡ ወሰትየ፡ ወይነ፡ ብዙኃ፡ ወፈድፋደ፡ ዘኢሰትየ፡ ከማሁ፡ ወኢበአሐቲ፡ ዕለት፡ እምአመ፡ ኮነ፡ ወእምአመ፡ ተወልደ።
Holofernes took great delight in her, and drank exceeding much wine, more than he had drunk at any time in one day since he was born.
