6:1 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἀντίοχος διεπορεύετο τὰς ἐπάνω χώρας καὶ ἤκουσεν ὅτι ἐστὶν Ἐλυμαῒς ἐν τῇ Περσίδι πόλις ἔνδοξος πλούτῳ ἀργυρίῳ καὶ χρυσίῳ
Et rex Antiochus perambulabat superiores regiones , et audivit esse civitatem Elymaidem in Perside nobilissimam , et copiosam in argento et auro ,
And king Antiochus was journeying through the upper countries; and he heard say, that in Elymais in Persia there was a city renowned for riches, for silver and gold;
6:2 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ τὸ ἱερὸν τὸ ἐν αὐτῇ πλούσιον σφόδρα καὶ ἐκεῖ καλύμματα χρυσᾶ καὶ θώρακες καὶ ὅπλα ἃ κατέλιπεν ἐκεῖ Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ τοῦ Φιλίππου ὁ βασιλεὺς ὁ Μακεδών ὃς ἐβασίλευσεν πρῶτος ἐν τοῖς Ἕλλησι
templumque in ea locuples valde , et illic velamina aurea , et loricæ , et scuta , quæ reliquit Alexander Philippi rex Macedo , qui regnavit primus in Græcia .
and that the temple which was in it was rich exceedingly, and that therein were golden shields, and breastplates, and arms, which Alexander, son of Philip, the Macedonian king, who reigned first among the Greeks, left behind there.
6:3 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἦλθεν καὶ ἐζήτει καταλαβέσθαι τὴν πόλιν καὶ προνομεῦσαι αὐτήν καὶ οὐκ ἠδυνάσθη ὅτι ἐγνώσθη ὁ λόγος τοῖς ἐκ τῆς πόλεως
Et venit , et quærebat capere civitatem , et deprædari eam : et non potuit , quoniam innotuit sermo his qui erant in civitate :
And he came and sought to take the city, and to pillage it; and he was not able, because the thing was known to them of the city,
6:4 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἀντέστησαν αὐτῷ εἰς πόλεμον καὶ ἔφυγεν καὶ ἀπῆρεν ἐκεῖθεν μετὰ λύπης μεγάλης ἀποστρέψαι εἰς Βαβυλῶνα
et insurrexerunt in prælium , et fugit inde , et abiit cum tristitia magna , et reversus est in Babyloniam .
and they rose up against him to battle: and he fled, and removed thence with great heaviness, to return to Babylon.
6:5 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἦλθέν τις ἀπαγγέλλων αὐτῷ εἰς τὴν Περσίδα ὅτι τετρόπωνται αἱ παρεμβολαὶ αἱ πορευθεῖσαι εἰς γῆν Ιουδα
Et venit qui nuntiaret ei in Perside , quia fugata sunt castra quæ erant in terra Juda :
And there came one bringing him tidings into Persia, that the armies, which went against the land of Judah, had been put to flight;
6:6 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἐπορεύθη Λυσίας δυνάμει ἰσχυρᾷ ἐν πρώτοις καὶ ἐνετράπη ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπίσχυσαν ὅπλοις καὶ δυνάμει καὶ σκύλοις πολλοῖς οἷς ἔλαβον ἀπὸ τῶν παρεμβολῶν ὧν ἐξέκοψαν
et quia abiit Lysias cum virtute forti in primis , et fugatus est a facie Judæorum , et invaluerunt armis , et viribus , et spoliis multis , quæ ceperunt de castris , quæ exciderunt :
and that Lysias went first with a strong army, and was put to shame before them; and that they had waxed strong by reason of arms and power, and with store of spoils, which they took from the armies that they had cut off;
6:7 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ καθεῖλον τὸ βδέλυγμα ὃ ᾠκοδόμησεν ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τὸ ἐν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ τὸ ἁγίασμα καθὼς τὸ πρότερον ἐκύκλωσαν τείχεσιν ὑψηλοῖς καὶ τὴν Βαιθσουραν πόλιν αὐτοῦ
et quia diruerunt abominationem , quam ædificaverat super altare quod erat in Jerusalem : et sanctificationem , sicut prius , circumdederunt muris excelsis , sed et Bethsuram civitatem suam .
and that they had pulled down the abomination which he had built upon the altar that was in Jerusalem; and that they had compassed about the sanctuary with high walls, as before, and Bethsura, his city.
6:8 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἤκουσεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τοὺς λόγους τούτους ἐθαμβήθη καὶ ἐσαλεύθη σφόδρα καὶ ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ τὴν κοίτην καὶ ἐνέπεσεν εἰς ἀρρωστίαν ἀπὸ τῆς λύπης ὅτι οὐκ ἐγένετο αὐτῷ καθὼς ἐνεθυμεῖτο
Et factum est ut audivit rex sermones istos , expavit , et commotus est valde : et decidit in lectum , et incidit in languorem præ tristitia , quia non factum est ei sicut cogitabat .
And it came to pass, when the king heard these words, he was astonished and moved exceedingly: and he laid him down upon his bed, and fell sick for grief, because it had not befallen him as he looked for.
6:9 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἦν ἐκεῖ ἡμέρας πλείους ὅτι ἀνεκαινίσθη ἐπ’ αὐτὸν λύπη μεγάλη καὶ ἐλογίσατο ὅτι ἀποθνῄσκει
Et erat illic per dies multos , quia renovata est in eo tristitia magna , et arbitratus est se mori .
And he was there many days, because great grief was renewed upon him, and he made account that he should die.
6:10 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἐκάλεσεν πάντας τοὺς φίλους αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς ἀφίσταται ὁ ὕπνος ἀπὸ τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν μου καὶ συμπέπτωκα τῇ καρδίᾳ ἀπὸ τῆς μερίμνης
Et vocavit omnes amicos suos , et dixit illis : Recessit somnus ab oculis meis , et concidi , et corrui corde præ sollicitudine :
And he called for all his Friends, and said to them, Sleep departs from my eyes, and my heart fails for care.
6:11 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ εἶπα τῇ καρδίᾳ ἕως τίνος θλίψεως ἦλθα καὶ κλύδωνος μεγάλου ἐν ᾧ νῦν εἰμι ὅτι χρηστὸς καὶ ἀγαπώμενος ἤμην ἐν τῇ ἐξουσίᾳ μου
et dixi in corde meo : In quantam tribulationem deveni , et in quos fluctus tristitiæ , in qua nunc sum : qui jucundus eram , et dilectus in potestate mea !
And I said in my heart, To what tribulation am I come, and how great a flood is it, wherein I now am! for I was gracious and beloved in my power.
6:12 ⧉ ⤴︎ νῦν δὲ μιμνῄσκομαι τῶν κακῶν ὧν ἐποίησα ἐν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ ἔλαβον πάντα τὰ σκεύη τὰ ἀργυρᾶ καὶ τὰ χρυσᾶ τὰ ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ ἐξαπέστειλα ἐξᾶραι τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Ιουδα διὰ κενῆς
Nunc vero reminiscor malorum quæ feci in Jerusalem , unde et abstuli omnia spolia aurea et argentea quæ erant in ea , et misi auferre habitantes Judæam sine causa .
But now I remember the evils which I did at Jerusalem, and that I took all the vessels of silver and gold that were therein, and sent forth to destroy the inhabitants of Judah without a cause.
6:13 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἔγνων ὅτι χάριν τούτων εὗρέν με τὰ κακὰ ταῦτα καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀπόλλυμαι λύπῃ μεγάλῃ ἐν γῇ ἀλλοτρίᾳ
Cognovi ergo quia propterea invenerunt me mala ista : et ecce pereo tristitia magna in terra aliena .
I percieve that on this account these evils are come upon me, and, behold, I perish through great grief in a strange land.
6:14 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Φίλιππον ἕνα τῶν φίλων αὐτοῦ καὶ κατέστησεν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ πάσης τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ
Et vocavit Philippum , unum de amicis suis , et præposuit eum super universum regnum suum :
And he called for Philip, one of his Friends, and set him over all his kingdom,
6:15 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ τὸ διάδημα καὶ τὴν στολὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸν δακτύλιον τοῦ ἀγαγεῖν Ἀντίοχον τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκθρέψαι αὐτὸν τοῦ βασιλεύειν
et dedit ei diadema , et stolam suam , et annulum , ut adduceret Antiochum filium suum , et nutriret eum , et regnaret .
and gave him his diadem, and his robe, and his signet ring, to the end he should bring Antiochus his son, and nourish him up that he might be king.
6:16 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἀπέθανεν ἐκεῖ Ἀντίοχος ὁ βασιλεὺς ἔτους ἐνάτου καὶ τεσσαρακοστοῦ καὶ ἑκατοστοῦ
Et mortuus est illic Antiochus rex anno centesimo quadragesimo nono .
And king Antiochus died there in the hundred and forty and ninth year.
6:17 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἐπέγνω Λυσίας ὅτι τέθνηκεν ὁ βασιλεύς καὶ κατέστησεν βασιλεύειν Ἀντίοχον τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ ὃν ἐξέθρεψεν νεώτερον καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Εὐπάτωρ
Et cognovit Lysias quoniam mortuus est rex , et constituit regnare Antiochum filium ejus , quem nutrivit adolescentem : et vocavit nomen ejus Eupator .
And Lysias knew that the king was dead, and he set up Antiochus his son to reign, whom he had nourished up being young, and he called his name Eupator.
6:18 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ οἱ ἐκ τῆς ἄκρας ἦσαν συγκλείοντες τὸν Ισραηλ κύκλῳ τῶν ἁγίων καὶ ζητοῦντες κακὰ δῑ ὅλου καὶ στήριγμα τοῖς ἔθνεσιν
Et hi qui erant in arce , concluserant Israël in circuitu sanctorum : et quærebant eis mala semper , et firmamentum gentium .
And those who were in the citadel shut up Israel round about the sanctuary, and sought always their hurt, and the strengthening of the Gentiles.
6:19 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἐλογίσατο Ιουδας ἐξᾶραι αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐξεκκλησίασε πάντα τὸν λαὸν τοῦ περικαθίσαι ἐπ’ αὐτούς
Et cogitavit Judas disperdere eos : et convocavit universum populum , ut obsiderent eos .
And Judas thought to destroy them, and called all the people together to besiege them.
6:20 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ συνήχθησαν ἅμα καὶ περιεκάθισαν ἐπ’ αὐτὴν ἔτους πεντηκοστοῦ καὶ ἑκατοστοῦ καὶ ἐποίησεν βελοστάσεις καὶ μηχανάς
Et convenerunt simul , et obsederunt eos anno centesimo quinquagesimo , et fecerunt ballistas et machinas .
And they were gathered together, and besieged them in the hundred and fifties year, and he made mounds to shoot from, and engines of war.
6:21 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἐξῆλθον ἐξ αὐτῶν ἐκ τοῦ συγκλεισμοῦ καὶ ἐκολλήθησαν αὐτοῖς τινες τῶν ἀσεβῶν ἐξ Ισραηλ
Et exierunt quidam ex eis qui obsidebantur : et adjunxerunt se illis aliqui impii ex Israël ,
And there came forth some of those who were shut up, and there were joined to them certain ungodly men of Israel.
6:22 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα καὶ εἶπον ἕως πότε οὐ ποιήσῃ κρίσιν καὶ ἐκδικήσεις τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ἡμῶν
et abierunt ad regem , et dixerunt : Quousque non facis judicium , et vindicas fratres nostros ?
And they went to the king, and said, How long will you not execute judgement, and avenge our kindred?
6:23 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἡμεῖς εὐδοκοῦμεν δουλεύειν τῷ πατρί σου καὶ πορεύεσθαι τοῖς ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ λεγομένοις καὶ κατακολουθεῖν τοῖς προστάγμασιν αὐτοῦ
Nos decrevimus servire patri tuo , et ambulare in præceptis ejus , et obsequi edictis ejus :
We were willing to serve your father, and to walk after his words, and to follow his commandments;
6:24 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ περιεκάθηντο ἐπ’ αὐτὴν οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ λαοῦ ἡμῶν χάριν τούτου καὶ ἠλλοτριοῦντο ἀφ’ ἡμῶν πλὴν ὅσοι εὑρίσκοντο ἐξ ἡμῶν ἐθανατοῦντο καὶ αἱ κληρονομίαι ἡμῶν διηρπάζοντο
et filii populi nostri propter hoc alienabant se a nobis , et quicumque inveniebantur ex nobis , interficiebantur , et hæreditates nostræ diripiebantur .
and for this cause the children of our people besieged the citadel, and were alienated from us; but as many of us as they could light on they killed, and plundered our inheritances.
6:25 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ οὐκ ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς μόνον ἐξέτειναν χεῖρα ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐπὶ πάντα τὰ ὅρια αὐτῶν
Et non ad nos tantum extenderunt manum , sed et in omnes fines nostros :
And not against us only did they stretch out their hand, but also against all their borders.
6:26 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἰδοὺ παρεμβεβλήκασι σήμερον ἐπὶ τὴν ἄκραν ἐν Ιερουσαλημ τοῦ καταλαβέσθαι αὐτήν καὶ τὸ ἁγίασμα καὶ τὴν Βαιθσουραν ὠχύρωσαν
et ecce applicuerunt hodie ad arcem Jerusalem occupare eam , et munitionem Bethsuram munierunt :
And, behold, they are encamped this day against the citadel at Jerusalem, to take it: and the sanctuary and Bethsura have they fortified.
6:27 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἐὰν μὴ προκαταλάβῃ αὐτοὺς διὰ τάχους μείζονα τούτων ποιήσουσιν καὶ οὐ δυνήσῃ τοῦ κατασχεῖν αὐτῶν
et nisi præveneris eos velocius , majora quam hæc facient , et non poteris obtinere eos .
And if you⌃ are not beforehand with them quickly, they will do greater things than these, and you shall not be able to control them.
6:28 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ὠργίσθη ὁ βασιλεύς ὅτε ἤκουσεν καὶ συνήγαγεν πάντας τοὺς φίλους αὐτοῦ ἄρχοντας δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς ἐπὶ τῶν ἡνιῶν
Et iratus est rex , ut hæc audivit : et convocavit omnes amicos suos , et principes exercitus sui , et eos qui super equites erant :
And when the king heard this, he was angry, and gathered together all his Friends, even the rulers of his army, and those who were over the horse.
6:29 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἀπὸ βασιλειῶν ἑτέρων καὶ ἀπὸ νήσων θαλασσῶν ἦλθον πρὸς αὐτὸν δυνάμεις μισθωταί
sed et de regnis aliis et de insulis maritimis venerunt ad eum exercitus conductitii .
And there came to him from other kingdoms, and from isles of the sea, bands of hired soldiers.
6:30 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἦν ὁ ἀριθμὸς τῶν δυνάμεων αὐτοῦ ἑκατὸν χιλιάδες πεζῶν καὶ εἴκοσι χιλιάδες ἱππέων καὶ ἐλέφαντες δύο καὶ τριάκοντα εἰδότες πόλεμον
Et erat numerus exercitus ejus , centum millia peditum , et viginti millia equitum , et elephanti triginta duo , docti ad prælium .
And the number of his forces was a hundred thousand footmen, and twenty thousand horsemen, and two and thirty elephants trained for war.
6:31 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἦλθον διὰ τῆς Ιδουμαίας καὶ παρενέβαλον ἐπὶ Βαιθσουραν καὶ ἐπολέμησαν ἡμέρας πολλὰς καὶ ἐποίησαν μηχανάς καὶ ἐξῆλθον καὶ ἐνεπύρισαν αὐτὰς πυρὶ καὶ ἐπολέμησαν ἀνδρωδῶς
Et venerunt per Idumæam , et applicuerunt ad Bethsuram , et pugnaverunt dies multos : et fecerunt machinas , et exierunt , et succenderunt eas igni , et pugnaverunt viriliter .
And they went through Idumaea, and encamped against Bethsura, and fought against it many days, and made engines of war; and they of Bethsura came out, and burned them with fire, and fought valiantly.
6:32 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἀπῆρεν Ιουδας ἀπὸ τῆς ἄκρας καὶ παρενέβαλεν εἰς Βαιθζαχαρια ἀπέναντι τῆς παρεμβολῆς τοῦ βασιλέως
Et recessit Judas ab arce , et movit castra ad Bethzacharam contra castra regis .
And Judas removed from the citadel, and encamped at Bethzacharias, near the king’s camp.
6:33 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ὤρθρισεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸ πρωὶ καὶ ἀπῆρεν τὴν παρεμβολὴν ἐν ὁρμήματι αὐτῆς κατὰ τὴν ὁδὸν Βαιθζαχαρια καὶ διεσκευάσθησαν αἱ δυνάμεις εἰς τὸν πόλεμον καὶ ἐσάλπισαν ταῖς σάλπιγξιν
Et surrexit rex ante lucem , et concitavit exercitus in impetum contra viam Bethzacharam : et comparaverunt se exercitus in prælium , et tubis cecinerunt :
And the king rose early in the morning, and removed his army at full speed along the road to Bethzacharias, and his forces made them ready to battle, and sounded with the trumpets.
6:34 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ τοῖς ἐλέφασιν ἔδειξαν αἷμα σταφυλῆς καὶ μόρων τοῦ παραστῆσαι αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸν πόλεμον
et elephantis ostenderunt sanguinem uvæ et mori , ad acuendos eos in prælium :
And they showed the elephants the blood of grapes and mulberries, that they might prepare them for the battle.
6:35 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ διεῖλον τὰ θηρία εἰς τὰς φάλαγγας καὶ παρέστησαν ἑκάστῳ ἐλέφαντι χιλίους ἄνδρας τεθωρακισμένους ἐν ἁλυσιδωτοῖς καὶ περικεφαλαῖαι χαλκαῖ ἐπὶ τῶν κεφαλῶν αὐτῶν καὶ πεντακοσία ἵππος διατεταγμένη ἑκάστῳ θηρίῳ ἐκλελεγμένη
et diviserunt bestias per legiones , et astiterunt singulis elephantis mille viri in loricis concatenatis , et galeæ æreæ in capitibus eorum : et quingenti equites ordinati unicuique bestiæ electi erant .
And they divided the beasts among the phalanxes, and they set by each elephant a thousand men armed with coats of mail, and helmets of brass on their heads; and for each beast were appointed five hundred chosen horsemen.
6:36 ⧉ ⤴︎ οὗτοι πρὸ καιροῦ οὗ ἂν ᾖ τὸ θηρίον ἦσαν καὶ οὗ ἐὰν ἐπορεύετο ἐπορεύοντο ἅμα οὐκ ἀφίσταντο ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ
Hi ante tempus , ubicumque erat bestia , ibi erant : et quocumque ibat , ibant , et non discedebant ab ea .
These were ready beforehand, wherever the beast was; and wherever the beast went, they went with him; they departed not from him.
6:37 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ πύργοι ξύλινοι ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ὀχυροὶ σκεπαζόμενοι ἐφ’ ἑκάστου θηρίου ἐζωσμένοι ἐπ’ αὐτοῦ μηχαναῖς καὶ ἐφ’ ἑκάστου ἄνδρες δυνάμεως τέσσαρες οἱ πολεμοῦντες ἐπ’ αὐτοῖς καὶ ὁ Ἰνδὸς αὐτοῦ
Sed et turres ligneæ super eos firmæ protegentes super singulas bestias : et super eas machinæ : et super singulas viri virtutis triginta duo , qui pugnabant desuper : et Indus magister bestiæ .
And towers of wood were upon them, strong and covered, one upon each beast, girded fast upon him with cunning contrivances; and upon each beast were two and thirty valiant men that fought upon them, beside his Indian
6:38 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ τὴν ἐπίλοιπον ἵππον ἔνθεν καὶ ἔνθεν ἔστησεν ἐπὶ τὰ δύο μέρη τῆς παρεμβολῆς κατασείοντες καὶ καταφρασσόμενοι ἐν ταῖς φάλαγξιν
Et residuum equitatum hinc et inde statuit in duas partes , tubis exercitum commovere , et perurgere constipatos in legionibus ejus .
(and the residue of the horsemen he set on this side and that side at the two parts of the army), striking terror into the enemy, and protected by the phalanxes.
6:39 ⧉ ⤴︎ ὡς δὲ ἔστιλβεν ὁ ἥλιος ἐπὶ τὰς χρυσᾶς καὶ χαλκᾶς ἀσπίδας ἔστιλβεν τὰ ὄρη ἀπ’ αὐτῶν καὶ κατηύγαζεν ὡς λαμπάδες πυρός
Et ut refulsit sol in clypeos aureos et æreos , resplenduerunt montes ab eis , et resplenduerunt sicut lampades ignis .
Now when the sun shone upon the shields of gold and brass, the mountains shone therewith, and blazed like torches of fire.
6:40 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἐξετάθη μέρος τι τῆς παρεμβολῆς τοῦ βασιλέως ἐπὶ τὰ ὑψηλὰ ὄρη καί τινες ἐπὶ τὰ ταπεινά καὶ ἤρχοντο ἀσφαλῶς καὶ τεταγμένως
Et distincta est pars exercitus regis per montes excelsos , et alia per loca humilia : et ibant caute et ordinate .
And a part of the king’s army was spread upon the high mountains, and some on the low ground, and they went on firmly and in order.
6:41 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἐσαλεύοντο πάντες οἱ ἀκούοντες φωνῆς πλήθους αὐτῶν καὶ ὁδοιπορίας τοῦ πλήθους καὶ συγκρουσμοῦ τῶν ὅπλων ἦν γὰρ ἡ παρεμβολὴ μεγάλη σφόδρα καὶ ἰσχυρά
Et commovebantur omnes inhabitantes terram a voce multitudinis , et incessu turbæ , et collisione armorum : erat enim exercitus magnus valde , et fortis .
And all that heard the noise of their multitude, and the marching of the multitude, and the rattling of the arms, did quake: for the army was exceeding great and strong.
6:42 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἤγγισεν Ιουδας καὶ ἡ παρεμβολὴ αὐτοῦ εἰς παράταξιν καὶ ἔπεσον ἀπὸ τῆς παρεμβολῆς τοῦ βασιλέως ἑξακόσιοι ἄνδρες
Et appropiavit Judas et exercitus ejus in prælium , et ceciderunt de exercitu regis sexcenti viri .
And Judas and his army drew near for battle, and there fell of the king’s army six hundred men.
6:43 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ εἶδεν Ελεαζαρος ὁ Αυαραν ἓν τῶν θηρίων τεθωρακισμένον θώραξιν βασιλικοῖς καὶ ἦν ὑπεράγον πάντα τὰ θηρία καὶ ᾠήθη ὅτι ἐν αὐτῷ ἐστιν ὁ βασιλεύς
Et vidit Eleazar filius Saura unam de bestiis loricatam loricis regis : et erat eminens super ceteras bestias , et visum est ei quod in ea esset rex :
And Eleazar, who was called Avaran, saw one of the beasts armed with royal breastplates, and he was higher than all the beasts, and the king seemed to be upon him;
6:44 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἔδωκεν ἑαυτὸν τοῦ σῶσαι τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ περιποιῆσαι ἑαυτῷ ὄνομα αἰώνιον
et dedit se ut liberaret populum suum , et acquireret sibi nomen æternum .
and he gave himself to deliver his people, and to get him an everlasting name;
6:45 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἐπέδραμεν αὐτῷ θράσει εἰς μέσον τῆς φάλαγγος καὶ ἐθανάτου δεξιὰ καὶ εὐώνυμα καὶ ἐσχίζοντο ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ ἔνθα καὶ ἔνθα
Et cucurrit ad eam audacter in medio legionis , interficiens a dextris et a sinistris , et cadebant ab eo huc atque illuc .
and he ran upon him courageously into the midst of the phalanx, and killed on the right hand and on the left, and they parted asunder from him on this side and on that.
6:46 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ εἰσέδυ ὑπὸ τὸν ἐλέφαντα καὶ ὑπέθηκεν αὐτῷ καὶ ἀνεῖλεν αὐτόν καὶ ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἐπάνω αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπέθανεν ἐκεῖ
Et ivit sub pedes elephantis , et supposuit se ei , et occidit eum : et cecidit in terram super ipsum , et mortuus est illic .
And he crept under the elephant, and thrust him from beneath, and killed him; and the elephant fell to the earth upon him, and he died there.
6:47 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ εἶδον τὴν ἰσχὺν τῆς βασιλείας καὶ τὸ ὅρμημα τῶν δυνάμεων καὶ ἐξέκλιναν ἀπ’ αὐτῶν
Et videntes virtutem regis , et impetum exercitus ejus , diverterunt se ab eis .
And they saw the strength of the kingdom, and the fierce onset of the army, and turned away from them.
6:48 ⧉ ⤴︎ οἱ δὲ ἐκ τῆς παρεμβολῆς τοῦ βασιλέως ἀνέβαινον εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτῶν εἰς Ιερουσαλημ καὶ παρενέβαλεν ὁ βασιλεὺς εἰς τὴν Ιουδαίαν καὶ εἰς τὸ ὄρος Σιων
Castra autem regis ascenderunt contra eos in Jerusalem , et applicuerunt castra regis ad Judæam , et montem Sion .
But they of the king’s army went up to Jerusalem to meet them, and the king encamped toward Judea, and toward mount Sion.
6:49 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἐποίησεν εἰρήνην μετὰ τῶν ἐκ Βαιθσουρων καὶ ἐξῆλθον ἐκ τῆς πόλεως ὅτι οὐκ ἦν αὐτοῖς ἐκεῖ διατροφὴ τοῦ συγκεκλεῖσθαι ἐν αὐτῇ ὅτι σάββατον ἦν τῇ γῇ
Et fecit pacem cum his qui erant in Bethsura : et exierunt de civitate , quia non erant eis ibi alimenta conclusis , quia sabbata erant terræ .
And he made peace with them of Bethsura; and he came out of the city, because they had no food there to endure the siege, because it was a Sabbath to the land.
6:50 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ κατελάβετο ὁ βασιλεὺς τὴν Βαιθσουραν καὶ ἀπέταξεν ἐκεῖ φρουρὰν τηρεῖν αὐτήν
Et comprehendit rex Bethsuram : et constituit illic custodiam servare eam .
And the king took Bethsura, and appointed a garrison there to keep it.
6:51 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ παρενέβαλεν ἐπὶ τὸ ἁγίασμα ἡμέρας πολλὰς καὶ ἔστησεν ἐκεῖ βελοστάσεις καὶ μηχανὰς καὶ πυροβόλα καὶ λιθοβόλα καὶ σκορπίδια εἰς τὸ βάλλεσθαι βέλη καὶ σφενδόνας
Et convertit castra ad locum sanctificationis dies multos : et statuit illic ballistas , et machinas , et ignis jacula , et tormenta ad lapides jactandos , et spicula , et scorpios ad mittendas sagittas , et fundibula .
And he encamped against the sanctuary many days; and set there mounds to shoot from, and engines of war, and instruments for casting fire and stones, and pieces to cast darts, and slings.
6:52 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἐποίησαν καὶ αὐτοὶ μηχανὰς πρὸς τὰς μηχανὰς αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπολέμησαν ἡμέρας πολλάς
Fecerunt autem et ipsi machinas adversus machinas eorum , et pugnaverunt dies multos .
And they also made engines against their engines, and fought for many days.
6:53 ⧉ ⤴︎ βρώματα δὲ οὐκ ἦν ἐν τοῖς ἀγγείοις διὰ τὸ ἕβδομον ἔτος εἶναι καὶ οἱ ἀνασῳζόμενοι εἰς τὴν Ιουδαίαν ἀπὸ τῶν ἐθνῶν κατέφαγον τὸ ὑπόλειμμα τῆς παραθέσεως
Escæ autem non erant in civitate , eo quod septimus annus esset : et qui remanserant in Judæa de gentibus , consumpserant reliquias eorum , quæ repositæ fuerant .
But there were no food in the sanctuary, because it was the seventh year, and those who fled for safety into Judea from among the Gentiles had eaten up the residue of the store;
6:54 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ὑπελείφθησαν ἐν τοῖς ἁγίοις ἄνδρες ὀλίγοι ὅτι κατεκράτησεν αὐτῶν ὁ λιμός καὶ ἐσκορπίσθησαν ἕκαστος εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ
Et remanserunt in sanctis viri pauci , quoniam obtinuerat eos fames : et dispersi sunt unusquisque in locum suum .
and there were but a few left in the sanctuary, because the famine prevailed against them, and they were scattered, each man to his own place.
6:55 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἤκουσεν Λυσίας ὅτι Φίλιππος ὃν κατέστησεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἀντίοχος ἔτι ζῶντος αὐτοῦ ἐκθρέψαι Ἀντίοχον τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ βασιλεῦσαι αὐτόν
Et audivit Lysias quod Philippus , quem constituerat rex Antiochus cum adhuc viveret , ut nutriret Antiochum filium suum , et regnaret ,
And Lysias heard say, that Philip, whom Antiochus the king, whiles he was yet alive, appointed to nourish up his son Antiochus, that he might be king,
6:56 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἀπέστρεψεν ἀπὸ τῆς Περσίδος καὶ Μηδίας καὶ αἱ δυνάμεις αἱ πορευθεῖσαι μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ ὅτι ζητεῖ παραλαβεῖν τὰ τῶν πραγμάτων
reversus esset a Perside et Media , et exercitus qui abierat cum ipso , et quia quærebat suscipere regni negotia :
was returned from Persia and Media, and with him the forces that went with the king, and that he was seeking to take to him the government.
6:57 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ κατέσπευδεν καὶ ἐπένευσεν τοῦ ἀπελθεῖν καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα καὶ τοὺς ἡγεμόνας τῆς δυνάμεως καὶ τοὺς ἄνδρας ἐκλείπομεν καθ’ ἡμέραν καὶ ἡ τροφὴ ἡμῖν ὀλίγη καὶ ὁ τόπος οὗ παρεμβάλλομέν ἐστιν ὀχυρός καὶ ἐπίκειται ἡμῖν τὰ τῆς βασιλείας
festinavit ire , et dicere ad regem , et duces exercitus : Deficimus quotidie , et esca nobis modica est ; et locus , quem obsidemus , est munitus , et incumbit nobis ordinare de regno .
And he made haste, and gave consent to depart; and he said to the king and the leaders of the army and to the men, We decay daily, and our food is scant, and the place where we encamp is strong, and the affairs of the kingdom lie upon us:
6:58 ⧉ ⤴︎ νῦν οὖν δῶμεν δεξιὰς τοῖς ἀνθρώποις τούτοις καὶ ποιήσωμεν μετ’ αὐτῶν εἰρήνην καὶ μετὰ παντὸς ἔθνους αὐτῶν
Nunc itaque demus dextras hominibus istis , et faciamus cum illis pacem , et cum omni gente eorum :
now therefore let us give the right hand to these men, and make peace with them and with all their nation,
6:59 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ στήσωμεν αὐτοῖς τοῦ πορεύεσθαι τοῖς νομίμοις αὐτῶν ὡς τὸ πρότερον χάριν γὰρ τῶν νομίμων αὐτῶν ὧν διεσκεδάσαμεν ὠργίσθησαν καὶ ἐποίησαν ταῦτα πάντα
et constituamus illis ut ambulent in legitimis suis sicut prius : propter legitima enim ipsorum , quæ despeximus , irati sunt , et fecerunt omnia hæc .
and covenant with them, that they shall walk after their own laws, as aforetime: for because of their laws which we abolished they were angered, and did all these things.
6:60 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἤρεσεν ὁ λόγος ἐναντίον τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ τῶν ἀρχόντων καὶ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς εἰρηνεῦσαι καὶ ἐπεδέξαντο
Et placuit sermo in conspectu regis et principum : et misit ad eos pacem facere , et receperunt illam .
And the saying pleased the king and the princes, and he sent to them to make peace; and they accepted thereof.
6:61 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ὤμοσεν αὐτοῖς ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες ἐπὶ τούτοις ἐξῆλθον ἐκ τοῦ ὀχυρώματος
Et juravit illis rex et principes , et exierunt de munitione .
And the king and the princes sware to them: thereupon they came forth from the stronghold.
6:62 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ εἰσῆλθεν ὁ βασιλεὺς εἰς ὄρος Σιων καὶ εἶδεν τὸ ὀχύρωμα τοῦ τόπου καὶ ἠθέτησεν τὸν ὁρκισμόν ὃν ὤμοσεν καὶ ἐνετείλατο καθελεῖν τὸ τεῖχος κυκλόθεν
Et intravit rex montem Sion , et vidit munitionem loci : et rupit citius juramentum quod juravit , et mandavit destruere murum in gyro .
And the king entered into mount Sion; and he saw the strength of the place, and set at nothing the oath which he had sworn, and gave commandment to pull down the wall round about.
6:63 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἀπῆρεν κατὰ σπουδὴν καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν εἰς Ἀντιόχειαν καὶ εὗρεν Φίλιππον κυριεύοντα τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἐπολέμησεν πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ κατελάβετο τὴν πόλιν βίᾳ
Et discessit festinanter , et reversus est Antiochiam , et invenit Philippum dominantem civitati : et pugnavit adversus eum , et occupavit civitatem .
And he removed in haste, and returned to Antioch, and found Philip master of the city; and he fought against him, and took the city by force.
